Yes, I know. It's impossible to teach someone to drive by tossing up advice in a forum but there's reason to my rationality.

At one point or another, everyone here will find him/herself behind the wheel. Regardless of your previous knowledge, training or experience, you will most likely be involved in an accident at some point.

Some "Road Rules" seem to be common sense. We adhere to them without thinking. For instance, I use my blinker to signal a turn or lane-change no matter if there is another vehicle in sight. I don't do it to obey the law or follow rules; I do it to lessen my chances of waking up in the morgue.

Here's a recent event in the news that will hopefully make you think.

A young woman (17) was driving one of her parents' vehicles (V1) on an interstate/expressway when V1 broke down. She called her mother who showed up in another vehicle (V2) and told her daughter to steer steer V1 while she pushed with V2. They proceded along in the "slow lane" until they reach a junction with another major expressway, whereas they found themselves in the "fast-lane". Think of it as an inverted Y.

Multiple collisions and fiery deaths later, the mother and daughter are alive. Since the daughter is one year from being considered an adult, her mother will take the full brunt of the charges.

See? You thought I was just gonna talk about following distance, 4-way stops and shit like that, didn't you.

Don't get killed driving. Teach some How-To's. Post about idiots on the road. Don't hold back.

Yeah, I signal whether I see a car or not too. I love pissing off the idiots that do 45 on residential side streets by going the limit right in the fucking middle. Let them get stuck behind me for a block, I'm not going to go faster to make them happy and risk hitting a kid. I like how responsible people are around here...seeing them go 70 on a main street and treat it like a freeway is commonplace. There's an advantage to it though: if the Secretary of State will give THEM a license, they'll give me one. Bleh...guess I got material for another rant to stick on my site. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

That's not really defensive driving EA, wind the idiots up and they'll drive even more dangerously.

Still it reminds me of a quality moment on the road.

We were off to a festival in Belgium, a whole van load. I was navigating and we'd finally reaching this city and it's rush hour and there's like five lanes of traffic going four different directions.

So we're weaving a little going slowly, making sure we get the right lane, and there's Belgiuos arsehole behind us tooting his horn like a wanker.

He gets his chance, speeds around us, gives us the finger and slams into the car in front of us.

We waved as we passed him.

Trust me, they can't drive any more dangerously. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/wink.gif

does having a bumper sticker that says "drive it like you stole it" not help the situation?

Something to keep in mind.
The interstate system in this country was designed for the military to get from sea to shining sea.
It was justified by commercial traffic (big trucks) which shut down the RR.
We are all just passersbye on the highway.
On the highway (or anywhere that big rigs run) I drive the speed limit.
I drive the little country highways 26 miles round trip to work every day. I rarely run over 45 MPH. Now there is a community springing up here that is filled with people from Dallas fleeing the city.
They built a new bridge to avoid flooding and expanded part of the road to four lanes.
Now Idiots run 70 MPH on my little back roads all day long.
Me? I just pull over in the grass and let them by.
No what? I'm never late. I don't hit deer. I get great gas mileage. And I feel good all the way to work and all the way home.
It's not how you get there its how you feel when you get there.

I was hitchhiking with a bag of weed once, one of my favorite passtimes in my youth, when a long hair picks me up.

I roll up a doobie, and we're cruising along quite nicely, enjoying the countryside.

I'll never forget the moment when he turned to me and said.....'You know you're stoned when you're driving a V8 up a hill and you've just been passed by a truck'
