So, I was at the pub last night and one of my friends who is an avid reader of 'new scientist' was telling me about a radical new development in pain relief. Morphine etc, has long been a problem because it is addictive, and is hard to monitor the correct levels needed to aid relief properly.

So.. this scientist invented some sort of device which gets inserted in to your back, and controls your nerves.

Oh its first trial on a human, the device was turned on, and the woman started screaming and moaning. The doctors panicked and said 'get it off her, quickly!'
her reply was 'No fucking way, this feels GREAT'

he he

Apparently, during the trials on rats, the rats were given the choice of either eating, or being able to have another 'buzz' from this handy contraption.

They starved to death http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

All I can say is...GOD DAMNIT, I WANT ONE!!!

My cousin actually graduated from Harvard about 2 years ago and one of his major projects during school was placing electrodes in rats brains and then doing wierd shit to them...in one experiment, he hooked the electrodes up to a few rats' pleasure centers(areas that when stimulated, release dopamine)...he would then show them how to trigger a switch on each end of a long cage...the switch activated the electrodes but the rat had to hit one switch and then, to recieve another pleasant jolt, he had to run to the other side of the cage and hit the other switch...the rats picked up on this very quickly he said and as soon as they showed they had figured it out, he electrified the area between the two switches...now the rats had to recieve a painful(he assumed) electric shock to get a pleasant one...almost all of the rats would continue the behavior untill the voltage of the elctric shock became too much...

This showed a few things...one, rats will go through a shitload of trouble to feel good and two, even they have a cut off point or something similar to cost benifit analysis...Shepard was always a wierd kid...

As it turns out the spinal device was an utter failure. They later found that the woman thought the control panel was an ATM.
