View Full Version : Game's as teaching tools

Not sure if this should be in lessons or not, but....
I find myself wondering about what you people think of games as a means to teach different skills. I've played RPG's (role-playing games) for a good number of years now, and it would seem to me that a person can develop ways of thinking that may not have come to them before being introduced to these types of diversions.
I realize that some games that kids play are meant to teach things like social skills. But it seems to me that a lot of the time things like creative thinking are overlooked, or at least under valued in todays world. And in my humble opinion, activities like RPG's can be a means of nurturing new lines of thought.
Your opinions?

i have promoted this theory for a long time, i feel that much of my, what i deem to be above average, intelligence has its roots in thinking activities, such as roleplaying games.
how could it not? the games are designed to make you think, plus you add numbers and *boom* instant intelligence.. unlike certain shooters.
strategy games (such as starcraft http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif) also do the trick i think.
its truly a shame that these games tend to be in the minority http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/frown.gif

At least it seems that the paradigm is shifting, if only a little. Consloe RPG's might just pave the way for a growing interest in other types. Shit, even if people LARP (live action role play) That is something along the same vein.
Mayhap Ren faires will become a cool place to be.

Reflexes, strategy, coordination...
"Games" are superb teachers. In fact, entire national governments agree that vid-games help to prepare their troops for potential combat.
I like the idea of a Hyper-MUD.

Games like Screamer, Screamer 2 and to a lesser extent Gran Turismo taught me how to drive in that I could throw the cars around virtually to test their limits and more easily see the difference between FWD, RWD and AWD cars.
Wolf 3D taught me how to love.
Dune 2 taught me how to cry.
Simcity 2000 taught me how to be callous.
C&C taught me that bald men and black clothes are cool.
Frontier: Elite II taught me that i want to cruise the universe fucking shit up.
TIE Fighter taught me that Peace and Order and shiny black boots are what the Galaxy needs, not fish people in stupid looking starships.
Civilization II taught me everything.

Quake 1 taught me alot about networking (tcp/ip protocols), then Q2 taught me how to use the quake engine to benchmark and troubleshoot my pc and the network performance. if it wasn't for quake, i wouldn't have the job that i have now. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Just because it's rarely shown to us does not mean that it does not exist....
Mayhap these forums are a game of sorts to Kaye. A game where she tests the reponses of subjects against the stimuli she throws out there....
Mayhap I just woke up and have yet to get my caffiene dose for the morn...

I've been playing video games for about half my life now, and can name a few positive things:
Puzzle solving ability-Instead of giving up on something I don't understand, I try to look at it from different perspectives until I can.
Art appreciation-Video games have dropped my jaw many times.
Computers/Electronics-Thanks to game systems, mainly the Sega Saturn, I learned about mhz, bytes, and other jargon. I also learned almost everything I know about the internet from the netlink.
Oh yeah, and Mario is Missing taught me about geography or something. :P

Scrabble should have taught me how to spell, but didn't.
Monopoly should have taught me how to manage my money, but didn't.
Any game involving cards or dice showed me what an unluckly barstard I am, and rubbed it in.

I still hold to the truism that RPG's offer a bit more of the oppuortuinity to think in new ways. But other things, such as card games, can build pattern recognition skills.
