SARASOTA, Fla. -- Authorities are searching for the person who stole a baby Jesus from a family's Nativity scene and left behind an unusual ransom note that demanded that the family place a symbol used by some evolutionists on their car.
Helen and Ron Meijer said that they found the two-page note Monday morning when they noticed that the plastic Jesus was missing from their Nativity scene.
In letters cut from magazines, the thief demanded that the Meijers put on their car a fish with feet with the word "Darwin'' written inside.
Some backers of evolution use that as a spoof on the Christian fish symbol.
"If you ever want to hear from Jesus again, put this on your car Christmas Eve and park out front,'' the note read.
"We did not, of course, put the anti-Christ message on our car,'' Ron Meijer, 56, said.
"They can steal all the plastic dolls they want to, but they can't steal what's in my heart,'' Helen Meijer, 53, told a local newspaper Wednesday.
The doll was returned Christmas morning, but Sarasota County sheriff's detectives said that they are continuing their investigation, which could lead to misdemeanor theft charges against the culprit.
But even if the thief is found, the Meijers said they won't prosecute. They want to meet the thief and learn his or her motives.
"I think I could forgive the person and show them God's love,'' Helen Meijer said.

And I personally think it's equally ridiculous.
