How do I know that SETI@home is not just a front for the insidious government to trick me into allowing them an open door into my private store of top-secret and useful data on my hard drive. They could use the data to tighten their stranglehold on the populace of the planet. I alone hold the key to world domination. They must not get their hands on it. We must protect the tactical information at any cost.
They are watching me so closely, just waiting for their opportunity to subvert my family, infiltrate my computer and propogate the NEW WORLD ORDER.
No, I say. Make them do it the hard way. I will not invite the vampire into my home.

I tried that thar "SETI" business. Then I realized that I would be running my processor at 100% all the time. Me not being able to justify putting a brick on my trucks accelerator while I'm not using, also cannot justify this.
Also, I was so entranced by the pretty graphs that I stayed up looking at it all night, and didn't get a bit of sleep! I blame this on you Rogue Warrior! Die!! (or just hurt yourself badly!)

You're entitled to your own opinion....even though it's WRONG!
You can set it up to run two ways. All the time or only when the screen saver is running. I run it all the time on my work computer because, hey what the fuck do I care about my work machines resources? That machine is always connected so it can download packets at anytime.
I dont run it at home. I like keeping my resources free here.
This is the Asylum's (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=the+asylum) stats.
THT should start their own group too. Or maybe join the Asylums.

Yes, 100%. No matter how you run it. If your computer was in true idle, no processor, or very little, would be used. If you have win 2000 you can open up task manager and watch the level of your processor during the running of this program...it pegs it at 100. Probably wouldn't hurt your processor...but why risk it?

I've been running Seti at home for ummm, 4020 hours now, with no problems. I just make it a point to re-boot every 24 hours or so.

I've carefully watched my processor usage running SETI for over 18 months now (at one time I thought it had a memory leak, it doesn't, it was my cam software). When I am "idle", a relative term, SETI tries to consume most of my available processor, and I've seen it up between 70-80%. What you don't see is it's priority is set to "low", so if anything else kicks in or executes, SETI gives way and frees up that memory. A very clean, safe program, and a worthy cause.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">Seems like a pretty interesting thing to be a part of, but I'm going to wait until I get a cable connection.
Does it mean I'll get to meet these guys?

Actually Matt, the only time your connection comes into play is when you are uploading or downloading packets. Depending on how fast you process them (the average is between 15 and 18 hours), and how fast your dialup is, SETI may only be using your connection 3-5 minutes per day.
