It saddens me that issues of greater consequence take a back seat to tangible "pretties".
Diamonds and precious metals have only recently become something more than decorations. Mined diamonds in particular rarely become more than inert baubles used to display a hint of wealth or symbolize an emotion. The wearers are usually unaware of the lives lost for the stud in their nose, the ring on their finger or the cluster around their neck.
Diamonds do have industrial uses as do the precious metals. For the most part, they continue to serve us only as decoration and displays of power. We sit at the feet of those in possesion of these wonderful elements, yet the owners have no idea how to put them to good use.
The money chain described in this article justifies RW's postscript.

What is the difference between blood "diamonds" and blood "money." Two things that I can see. 1.) When it's our government sending the arms or cash to the small guerrilla wars, ( and not so small,) it's not considered blood money. They call them freedom dollars. Money or arms spent to liberate some poor people from the evil, evil dictators above them. If, however, these poor people could read the fine print of the pamphlet we sent, they would see that the replacement government probably isn's any better than what they had. In fact, more blood is going to be shed while we put them in place. While you vote for this new 'democratic' government, chances are some guy with an assault rifle is going to take you out. Die for the American version of freedom. How noble for you, my new Americanized friend.
2.) If the World allows the trading of these diamonds, they lose control over the amount of diamonds in the market. Lots and lots of wealthy people lose money when you flood the market. When Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Jones are wearing the same necklace or bracelet as the women in the 'lower' end of town, there will be hell to pay.
Remember Americans: Status is everything. Material things are how you are judged as a good citizen. ( If I'm lying, why do we throw the poor American in jail for having no material things and call it vagrancy? )
Dog Bless us, every one.

RW was quite correct in his original closing. The diamond cartel headed by the DeBeers family is well known for taking ANY measures necessary to maintain control.
By the way, define vagrancy as it applies to the "rule of law" in this country. I think you may be surprised.

I would just like to hear a better proposal for stopping the illegal flow of 'blood diamonds'. I mean, these people use these diamonds to wage a bloody and terrible civil war, via Switzerland, for the most part, and initially through Liberia. What should they do? Turn a blind eye? That would cause public outcry. What then? Intervene? It causes a public outcry. But at least they try and avoid more deaths this way.

Yah yah yah this was on NPR (National Propaganda Radio) a while back. I pretty much agree with ya Rogue.
Might be interesting to see what other things the UN is doing in Liberia; for instance, they imposed sanctions on countries that wouldn't "get with" their AIDS-prevention programs (read: prophylactics--they taught abstinence instead) so I suggest a further study into this.

Rogue, it was I who topped this year old thread. And you can answer your question by reading my post. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif
The title "African leaders trading gems for arms must be punished, says UN panel" was what I was really asking about. I wondered if in fact anything has happened to them in the year since.
Cool?
