View Full Version : the population of the universe is me

i am the only person that exists. here, i'll prove it:
the universe is infinite in size, and therefore contains an infinite number of planets. however, we know that most of these planets are not inhabited. this means that there is a finite number of inhabited planets, and therefore a finite number of people. and, since any number divided by infinite is so close to zero that you can't see the difference, this indicates that the odds of actually meeting another person are so vanishingly small as to be negligible. ergo, everyone i have ever met was a figment of my imagination. why my imagination would create people who are ugly and/or assholes, i do not know.
note: this is slightly stolen, but modified. think:douglass adams

OK

however, we know that most of these planets are not inhabited.
OK

this means that there is a finite number of inhabited planets
Not OK. You're comparing infinity. You just cant do that. infinity divided by 2, is still infinity. Infinity divided by 18 billion, is still infinity.
One one millionth a percent of infinity, is still infinity. So therefore, if a percentage of the planets are inhabited, there are infact an infinite number of inhabited planets.

and therefore a finite number of people.
no, this statement is based on a statement that has been proven false.

and, since any number divided by infinite is so close to zero that you can't see the difference, this indicates that the odds of actually meeting another person are so vanishingly small as to be negligible.
again, based on a false statement, therefore untrue.

ergo, everyone i have ever met was a figment of my imagination.
End result, a false conclusion.
Welcome to the world of math.

DT- I think he is talking about the limiting sum, or trying to.

... so am i.
infinity/infinity=indeterminate. infinities are not equal and cant really be compared in size.

I gave up considering the limitless possibilities long ago with a oz. of shrooms. Seems that no matter how you argue it, you feel small. I like to be bigger than that.
( good post, btw.)

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I think you covered them both there SLH. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

allow me to clarify: an infinite number of planets, not all inhabited, implys a lesser number of inhabited planets, even if that lesser number is infinte. as was stated above, infinties are not equal. inifity minus 1 is still infinty, but a lesser infinty. therefore, the number of people in the universe may be infinite, but not on the same order as the size of the universe. if that were true, you could not move or breathe because of the stifling crush of people, everywhere.
because any number smaller than infinity is, when divided by infinity, so nearly non-existent that its only rational value is 1, my conclusion stands. you are all figments of my imagination. a number smaller than infinity, but still infinte, is no less a smaller number.
sorry, DT, it needed saying, and you did leave that possibilty open in your post. that said, there is another, even more valid approach to the idea of being the only one around. it's called solipsism. the solipsistict point of view claims that there is no way to prove that there is an objective reality, as you could just as easily be imagining the proof.
once again, the population of the unverse is me, and i am therefore GOD. when i die, the universe will cease to be, and you won't care, or even notice, because you will never have been, let alone actually been self aware. you can't prove me wrong on the name of this topic. can't be done.

Incorrect, any number when divided by infinity, is so nearly non-existant that its only rational value is 0. not 1. By your logic, you disproved your existance... and by the same logic, I could state there are no planets, because the sheer amount of empty space in the universe is infinitely larger than the amount of filled space. That lesser infinity divided by the greater infinity of empty space would have a limit of 0 as well.

my conclusion stands. you are all figments of my imagination. a number smaller than infinity, but still infinte, is no less a smaller number.
By your logic, you too are a figment of your imagination. But how can you even be imagined, if you do not exist to do the imagining, by THAT logic, and some eff'd up methods of induction, the whole hypothesis fails in a blaze of nothing and a wimper of silence.

That being said, logically prove your own existance.

Nor can you prove yourself right. Because you too, do not exist. And thus the only conclusion that can be drawn is that there is, in fact, no god.
