View Full Version : Georgia Senate Votes to Change Flag

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Georgia's state senators voted on Tuesday to change the state flag by shrinking the size of a Confederate emblem which many regard as a symbol of deep-seated racism, heading off threats of an economic boycott of the state by civil rights groups.
The proposal to change the flag passed by a vote of 34-22 and followed approval last week by the House of Representatives. The change reduces the Confederate emblem, a Southern cross with white stars and blue bars on a red background, to one of five small flags at the bottom of a banner under the state seal.
The emblem was considered offensive to many blacks who saw it as a symbol of bigotry in the old slave-owning South. Some white southerners, on the other hand, viewed it as a symbol of pride in their heritage.
The vote was a victory for Georgia's Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes, who had lobbied legislators intensely on Monday.
In an impassioned plea before the vote, Barnes took aim at opponents who had argued that changing the flag would dishonor the state's heritage. He said the redesign was needed to send a message of inclusion to all Georgians.
"It is our job, our duty and our great challenge to fight the voices of division and seek the salve of reconciliation," Barnes told the packed Senate in Atlanta.
The Confederate emblem harks back to the Civil War era, but it was added to Georgia's state flag in 1956 by white lawmakers who wanted to maintain segregation in defiance of the growing civil rights movement.
Pressure to change the flag mounted last year after civil rights groups successfully used boycotts to force South Carolina to remove a Confederate flag from its state capitol.
The new Georgia flag was a compromise between lawmakers who wanted the Confederate emblem removed from the state flag and those who wanted some vestige of it to remain.
THREAT OF BOYCOTTS
Much was riding on the vote's outcome. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) officials had suggested they could pull the Final Four men's basketball tournament out of Atlanta next spring if the flag issue wasn't resolved.
And civil rights groups had threatened economic boycotts if the flag was not changed.
Before the vote, many senators said coming to a decision had been difficult.
State Sen. Joey Brush said though he was troubled by the racial divide over the flag, he opposed the redesign. "We don't need to be dividing up Georgia into good guys and bad guys," said Brush, who is white.
David Scott, a black senator, said changing the flag was a moral imperative. "There is a voice on high ... telling us to vote to change this flag not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it is the righteous thing to do," he said.
As the Senate debated on Tuesday, a few supporters and opponents of the redesigned flag held up signs expressing their views outside the capitol building.
"I just feel that incorporating the Confederate banner on a flag of a state that should represent all the people of the state is a wrong thing," said William K. Davis, an Atlanta resident who supported the change.
"Whether for right or wrong, the battle flag has been used by hate groups to perpetuate their own agendas. It's become symbolic of all that's wrong with the state and with America." But Billy Bearden, a resident of Bremen, about 50 miles west of Atlanta, circled the capitol steps holding a red battle flag with the Confederate emblem.
"I'm here to show my support for the current flag that incorporates the battle flag of the army of Northern Virginia," Bearden said. Bearden added that he opposes the compromise flag because it wasn't put to a vote of all Georgians.
"I agree that some people think there is a need and a time for a change," Bearden said. "But there is a method for change, and referendums and voter input and debate and open hearings are the way to go."
Token reaction:
damnit this sort of shit pisses me off. first south carolina (chris rock's home state) now georgia. naacp is so shitty, i know black people and deal with them very often and most who have commented aloud about it to me, because i was in the same office watching tv, have said its embarrassing that they make a fuss of this like it matters, and economic boycotts are bullshit. geogia would not suffer if the senators had said (what they should have said) "no dice." South Carolina didn't even feel the economic boycott, aint nobody going out of state to buy stuff! except for weed paraphernalia, they cant really sell it there. So, i am saying that N.A.A.C.P. members and supporters are the racists, a new flag wont fix their hate for the white man. senators dont need to encourage this shit, i'll bet you money that they will try to make another southern state bend over for them and i hope when that happens the senators tie all the racist naacp'ers to a truck bumper. and geogia and south carolina puts up the right flag, the one that means defeat but not by black racists.

jessie jackson maybe, but what were they trying to hide during the SC boycott...
who cares, just as long as my fuel to kill blacks who look down on me stays flying i could have reason to care less.
a note to anyone who has confederate stuff on their car: sc will make you take it off, but if you but a tag on your dash they cant touch it. I know a guy with the back window of his truck tinted to look like the flag and a cop cant say shit about it to him because its legal light transparency and on the inside, but if either of those things were turned the other way that shit would be taken off on the side of the road if you got a black cop and a stubborn reddneck like my friend to have that issue to be dealt with.

They screwed up. The first rule in dealing with terrorists is to never negotiate. They caved under their pressure and will cave again and again.
You might argue that the symbol shouldn't have been added but it was done legally. If you want it removed it should be done by consensus or mandate. This was neither. Guess what? The civil rights groups OWN them now.

<font color="lime">i agree with the pulling of the confederate flag from all official buildings, flags, insignias, and offices. why? let us look at another symbol, thousands of years old. until the twentieth century, this symbol was a bastion of love and light. it represented the cycle of life for many people. it was utilized by almost every culture of the world. it, along with the solar cross, was a tool of measurement for farmers, a calendar of sorts to measure seasons and weather. and then, hitler came along...
the swastika.
excerpt taken from this source:
http://www.locksley.com/6696/swastick.htm
"Nazi Germany took an ancient symbol and perverted it to such a degree that it can never be used again without bringing up all the associations of death, destruction, hatred and vileness that the NSDAP perpetrated. If the Swasticka is displayed in any of the "civilized" parts of the earth, the reactions of the viewer are universally of rage and disgust. This perversion of "right" may be one of the prime evils of the Nazis; they took patriotism, honorable military service and its associated ritual, chivalry, and the concept of "völkish," among so many other good and useful things, and perverted them into something so bad, so evil and vile, that to call a person a "Nazi" is one of the most terrible epithets a human can use. "
would any of you put a swastika on your car? even though for centuries it was a symbol of life and completion, it is now widely viewed by all walks of life as a reminder of the heinous perpetrations of a lunatic and his followers. a once proud, peaceful sign has been perverted into a sigil of hate. the same is true of the confederate flag. yes, it is a sign of heritage. but sometimes these things have to be laid to the side, until a time when people gain an understanding of their REAL heritage. i understand that the swastika was just a tool of hitler, but does the rest of the world? until we reach a higher level of enlightenment, until people take the time to learn about something, rather than react on their first knee-jerk impulses, many treasures of our history will be lost to us.
teach your children the correct the truth of these things, unbiased by hatred and contempt for those that do not understand. that is the first step to correcting these errors.

Slavery reparations...oh no!!
First, a little of my ancestry.
My dad's, dad's, dad's father was a full blooded Sioux Indian. Forced from his home, and forced to assimilate to the ways of America. Subsequently, the last name that I have, is just a 6 letter word given to him by the United States government. The next two generations of his children had their heritage physically taken out of them. If these American's whose ancestors came from Africa (I will not use the term African American) will be getting some money, I better damn well get some as well. Native American's had it far worse than the slaves ever did. But no one seems to care because they've been assimilated into the American society.
Now, I also have a much higher amount of Euopean ancestry. France, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and a few others. I believe both my mother's and my 1/2 of father's grandparents came from the above mentioned countries in the late 1800's - early 1900's. I know for a fact, most didn't speak any English. So, why should my money go into the pockets of these American's who feel they've been abused if there was no one around when slavery was in full effect?
Well, you guessed it, it shouldn't. I have abused Native American blood in me, and I have non-slave holding European blood in me. This won't go over well with me.
United Negro (WTF??) College Fund. I've seen commercials for it. If a "negro" wants to go to college, that person can get the money for it. Don't blame me for your problems when there are many solutions available to you.
Money will not solve the problem. The people who would, if this possible case ever was won, need the money, are the one's who would spend it on crack, coke, booze, or any other form of shit that won't help their situation.
This is one more thing keeping this Nation from being un-race divided. There have been plea after plea for racial equality, yet every day someone wants to do something that separates the races of this Nation.
Affirmative Action, in case you are unaware, is racism against the white Americans. Racial equality will never end if on every single application for anything, there is a section for your skin color. Once again, wether or not you get the job is now based on race. As one employer might say, "Oh SHIT! We have to fill a racial quota, better hire some minorties regardless of the fact they are not really qualified for the position."
I've worked with many different races of people in my short life, and I've always tried to keep an open mind which makes life a lot easier. But I can tell you, some people just seem to live around stereotypes, and that's why they exist. If people weren't around who fit the description, they wouldn't exist. I've know Mexicans who work damn hard, and I know Mexicans who don't. I know dark skinned Americans who work hard, and I know those don't. The ones who don't work hard, do such a good job at being a fuck up, that they cancel out 20 others who do good.
I don't know if anything I've said makes any sense, I hope it does. There is so much intolerance, ignorance, apathy, and general mayhem in America, that I really don't see things getting any better. Because as long as these militant Reverends (I use that title VERY loosely) are around screaming RACISM!!!! nothing will get solved, and the racial divide will grow ever further apart.
Much, much more to come...

I attend the largest community college in the world (annual enrollment 55,000+), and I am around MANY different races and nationalities.
I've noticed a DISTINCT difference between actual African immigrants and Americans who have African blood. The immigrants have lived in the poverty stricken nations of Africa, and greatly appreciate what they have here. Where as the other above mentioned, don't give two shits and think we owe them more (that is a broad generalization about dark skinned Americans, I know many are very thankful for what they have, as I am).
IF these Americans are so caught up in their ancestry, to where they wish to have the title African IN FRONT OF America, they really should get a grasp on what their heritage is. It isn't about slavery, that's for damn sure. If you're so damn tired of this place, why not take a trip to Africa and see what it's like. Have you ever washed your hair with cow urine? And drank the same water you shit in? Welcome to your Continent. Love this Country you live in, and stop bitching.
Just one more thing in my list of many...

Let's not forget the fellow tribesmen who sold the slaves to the slave traders in the first place. The whiteys didn't herd them with ropes and horses. Most of the slaves were those who's tribe was conquered by the neighboring villages. They took their land and sold the peoples. I imagine the alternative would have been death. It looks like they did them a favor by selling them rather than eating them. Is the African government being sued as well for not protecting them?
I believe slavery was wrong but you better deduct all the blood spilled in the civil war on both sides as payment for the mistake. Should the rednecks sue the African government for selling them slaves and getting killed by it like the suits against the gun manufacturers?
It is all just a money grubbing scam put together by asshole lawyers.

<font color="lime">i'm not sure the what line of thinking you're using. could you perhaps explain to me what you mean by the US flag being prejudiced against "whites"? the united states flag represents our entire country, not just one faction of it. the fifty stars represent each state, and the thirteen stripes are for the thirteen original colonies that strove to break free from tyranny. how does this representation go against the very people that created it?</font>
myself...grew up until i was 14 in Texas...shiped all my shit up..my car...everything up north to connecticut...in texas we proudly saluted the confederacy and i still do..but not for slavery issues..its history, just like the US flag...i salute the confederate flag if i must at times because of great war generals like robert e lee...and the heart we had during the civil war.
<font color="lime">but that is the issue at hand. the confederate flag represented a part of america that wanted to promote and institutionalize slavery. that's why we had the civil war. yes, there were other issues involved, but that is the primary thought that people have when they think of that time period. the people that fought under that flag did so for the freedom to hold other people in chains, to use human beings as livestock.
let me ask you this: what is it about the confederate flag that is so important to you? what does it represent, to you? flags are only symbols. tell me what the confederate flag symbolizes that is so important that we should retain it, in the face of so many who find it degrading?</font>

I don't give two shits about the so-called "slavery" issue with the flag. But I do a problem with something else.
That flag represents a cecession from the Union. Something that simple means, "FUCK YOU, you're way sucks, we're going our own way." A blatent disrespect for the United States. When someone honors that flag, they honor a hatred of the United States, they themselves contain that hate.
You may say you love this country, but if you hold in high regard what that Confederate flag means, you're spitting on the flag that represents this Country. These United States.
(There were some good generals on the Confederate side, and you can honor them for their heroism all you want, that I can respect.)

It always was a nice-lookin' flag. But it is a symbol of hate groups, and everyone i know associates it with racism. I know it's also a symbol of rebellion, but anything that the Klu Klux Klan bears such attachment to needs to be exorcised. To be burned from the face of the world. Germany does not demand to include the Swastika on its flag because it's part of germany's "heritage" - i mean, can you imagine what would happen if they tried, arguing that although this flag was the symbol they used while butchering millions of people, it was also the symbol they were under when they went through an incredible economic reconstruction? That seems to be what the Georgians opposed to it seem to be doing. Sure you can remember the good, but the swastika and the Confederate flag remind people of the bad.
As to faceplant's argument, hell, if the US flag was a symbol of the oppression of white people, you can be assured i would be murderously angry at anyone who looked on it with pride.
While i think the NAACP is wasting a lot of resources on something that is merely symbolic as opposed to doing something more concrete to improve the living standards of African Americans, it does not mean that their cause is not just. The simple fact is the confederate flag is a symbol of racism, and all racism needs to be burned out of human consciousness.
