QUESTION!
Someone that uses this computer wants to register here. Their email is hotmail. Any way they can register with that? If not, no big deal.
ANOTHER QUESTION!
If we're both using the same computer, is there any way for the forum to remember both of our passwords, or do we have to manually log in each time?
Thanks!

Well RW.
If you are going to toast any one using hotmail I guess you might as well start with me. I have two hotmail addresses that I use. I don't use the email addys from my ISP because I jump around to the best deal / service and use as many as 4 ISP's a year. I am not changing my email every time my local ISP runs out of modems / speed and I am forced to move on.
Those "permanent" email addresses are a hook used by Isp's to keep you from leaving, in fear of missing mail and the hassle of sending out your new address every 6 months.
I don't know what the answer is RW maybe add to the rules that no duplicate names are allowed.
If I will not be allowed to post here with a hotmail account I will post elsewhere. I have had the hotmail account I am using here for 5 years. I haven't been with any ISP for more than one year.
If the rule is ....No more new members with hotmail...then my being allowed to post here is luck, because I registered early. Well that's horse shit. If you want this place to grow I don't think discouraging membership is the way to go.
In closing, if my hotmail address isn't good enough then I must leave, simply because I don't have another to give. Technically that isn't true. I have an email addy 6 of them with my latest ISP. I have been with them for a few weeks. I don't know what they are but according to this new rule can I sign up with a different screen name for each of my new email boxes offered by my new ISP? Oh well who cares I am just giving you crap now.
Please let me know what you think RW. This affects me personally. I don't want to leave this board but it doesn't seem like I am following the rules. And to think I just did another "Tribal" graphic. I better post it quick before I get my ass booted.

My only online personna for several years now, as I have no trouble standing behind what I say regardless of the forum or topic. Of course, 'MstrG' in itself is an alias, isn't it?
That said, I'll play devil's advocate for a spell....
Disclaimer: this is RW's forum and he is free to do with it as he sees fit. What you see below is opinion.

Originally posted by Dog Breath:

This to me is one of the biggest reasons for not restricting registrations, though there are several layers embedded within it.
First, you have the new people who are unwilling to provide you with their "real" email address (perhaps it contains their real name and they strive to protect their online privacy/identity).
You also have existing members, who for various reasons, might want to express a viewpoint without it being linked with their primary personna. Don't take this lightly; everyone here projects only what they want others to know about themselves.
You have people like Dog Breath who jump around ISPs. No sin there. It's nice having a 'permanent' address you can rely on.
You have people who borrow computers from others.
You have people viewing from their offices.
You have 'kids' using their parents' computer.
You get the picture. I could go on.

Truth is: you can't help it. If someone is determined to post anonymously (whatever that means), or with an alias, they will. You're only pushing them to be a little more inventive, the means are available. In the mean time, all the various people above are unlikely to take the time to figure out an alternative.
All of this of course begs the question: why? You and I haven't conversed on this topic RW, so I can only guess ...
Perhaps you think it will provide an extra layer of protection from people who come here with less than honorable intentions? No, it won't. They'll find a way. But so what, you have their IP numbers.
Or, perhaps it's an attempt to create a forum with "the right kind" of posters. Hmmmm, where are all those posts talking about "country clubs"?
Maybe you think there's something disingenuous about it, and it just rubs you the wrong way. That's your call, but you have to accept the consequences of it.
Certainly you don't really care whether that little number on the UBB index page actually reflects the number of people who actively post here?

In some ways, I can see how this approach to membership parallels your personal views and politics, and some of your reasons for starting this site in the first place. On the other hand, I can't help but be perplexed about the irony in calls for free speech in light of edited posts and a limited registration process. Just something to consider.

Originally posted by RogueWarrior:
What a fucked up day. I had decided, before I left work this morning, that Bumox and I had decided wrongly about the banning of free email addresses. Dog Breath's arguments alone had convinced me: Bumox and I work for our ISP, and it had never occurred to me that other people use free services for the reasons that Dog Breath had given. That was quite enough for me. It's kind of funny...Bumox and I had wanted to ban free services addresses before we ever started this thing; it was fairly high on our agenda for a while, but we kept making excuses not to do it...
Ah well. When I got home this morning, I discovered that something had gone terribly wrong with my computer: eight of my alphabet keys displayed numbers when I pressed them. Since none of my applications which require passwords have been told to remember them, I couldn't log on to my machine. Thus, this topic has been sitting here all day, with folks getting upset. I am very sorry for my delay in putting this to rest.
And MstrG: Thank you for your most excellently argued offering, but you missed my reasoning by a mile. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
None of which matters now: the restriction has been removed. I shall simply get rid of multiple identites as I see fit.
Quite simply: there is nothing you can't say in your own voice. And, if I'm not mistaken, someone has registered a community alias already: Fluffy The Naked MoleRat.
I have no real reason for my disdain for having multiple identities, other than the fact that it irritates the shit out of me. That ought to be enough. I see no restriction on your Freedom of Speech by my asking you to say what you will in your own voice: as MstrG so eloquently put it--he has only one because he NEEDS only one. For the sake of not irritating me to the point of homicidal rage, let's keep those to a minimum, shall we? I don't really think it's much to ask.
That's about it. I have been away from home for a couple of weeks now, staying in the town where I work, so I have been posting via my laptop computer, which is now in need of formatting and reloading. Until I get that done, I won't be able to post except from work, and I'll be doing very little of that. It's possible that you won't see too much of me until the weekend, when I finally return to my home in the woods. If anything goes wrong with the site or the UBB, please reprt it to Strider or Bumox as soon as you can. Have a good time, Tribals. Rock on. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I feel badly for the jobless/education deprived/poor people who cannot afford anything but a free email account and have borrow the computer of a family member or use one provided at a youth center or public school to access the internet.
Also, you would not believe the number of homeless people who line up outside the public library every morning waiting to log on to the internet free of charge to check their free email and communicate with other bums in libraries around the world for free.
Your new rule is a wise decision when it comes to preventing duplicates, RW, but in a way it also discriminates. I think it would be better to ban duplicate IP addresses...

"The preceding has been a Public Service Announcement, brought to you by General Dynamics, makers of the Rockeye Clusterbomb, the bomb that keeps on killing. "
Well RW Rockeyes are nice and all (see picture) but you can't dispute the raw body count of the 8" & 16" "bee-hive" round. Very crude but very effective. Not a very selective weapon like the Rockeye but I would stand under a Rockeye long before standing under a bee-hive. Military weapons are so cool. I used to make prototypes, fun fun fun!

BTW that airplane is dropping that shit very near my house. For those of you who want to track me down and kill me go to the China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center And look for a fat bearded guy with lots of guns and an empty bottle of Prozac.
