How would reducing greenhouse emmissions give the eviromentalists more power? Legislation would be put through to scale back on car emmissions even further than they are, and incentives to companies to use cleaner fuel in manufacturing etc, but how would this be giving them POWER? It might give them a bitof recognition, but otherwise? It might cause them to shut up a bit. But 5.2% reduction of greenhouse gases is not very fucking much. China is making some effort (which is very fucking surprising for commies) but that means that even the idealogicaly blinded commies can see that there are going to be problems. While I do admit that some enviromentalist groups are just out for publicity and power, some are not. And it is easy to see that there are problems? Ever been to Mexico City? Living there is like smoking a pack of ciggarettes a day from birth. I know, I've been there, and on bad days its fucking awlful. Excuse the spelling but I have a massive fucking hangover. If you want to debate it, cool. Just dont flame me cause i disagree with you. Dickheads.......

Yo, RW, in answer to your questions. True, the beaurocracy (sorry if this is wrong, my spelling that is, cause I'm typing in the dark, as light gives me a headache) can be a bit of a pain in the ass, but some things have to be regulated. Now if you have a tree that you want to chop down and they wont let you, true it sucks, but it is a price you pay to live in a safe, friendly environment in a first world country. And if you dont think it is any of the above; just think about Afghanistan or some other such wonderful place and suddenly where you live seems much better. Now reducing CO2 emmissions by 5.2% or some other bullshit sum is not that hard. Now if you think that the U.S. contributes 1/4 of the pollution, and has, what, 1/20th of the population, you can see where some of the problem is. True, if you add in the industrialised 1st world leader of the universe rah rah bullshit factor it becomes less, but not enough to justify the ammount it emmitts. Now if some of these poverty stricken holes such as most of Africa, pasts of Asia, South America, etc, get their acts together and start industrialising towards the scale of the U.S., then what is going to happen. A shitload more pollution.

And how can you say to a third world country trying to get out of poverty "don't use CFC's in your lights or fridges" or "don't let heavy industry pollute too much, or you're going to ruin the environment" what do you think they will say, when we, the first world, did or are still doing EXACTLY the same things? And I don't just mean that example. 3rd world countries are doing just as the 1st world did between 200 to 50 years ago. The only reason they are slower is because either they have little or no resources unlike 1st world countries, like the U.S. or Australia, or 1st world countries ripped them off the 3rd world, like France did in Africa or Britain did in half the world before it lost them. So we have the problem as it stands. And if that means a little more beurocracy on small things, than so be it. But I think that economics can take care of this. Two reasons.

1- As the world develops more and more, greater ammounts of fuel and especially petrol are needed. And we haven't made any more discoveries of a significant find in quite a while. So unless there are a trillion barrels hiding in Siberia or my backyard (I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised), we are using an unlimited ammount (assuming we dont wipe ourselves out in the next two hundred years) with a limited ammount (as oil doesn't form that quick). Therefore, under supply and demand, the price will go up as supply drops and demand increases (just imagine 1 or 2 car per houshold in China and India and I think you get the idea). Therefore as it becomes more expensive to use fuel, people will use less, and it will become economical to use other forms of power, such as gas and/or solar/wind/wave etc. The reason we use so much oil is that it is cheap to do so, and expensive to use other forms. That will change. The recent oil hikes are just the very tip of the iceberg.

2- The U.S. is considering/trying to put a value on CO2, and subsequencly so called 'Carbon Sinks', large tracts of woodland designed to suck CO2 from the atmoshpere. (Typical American thinking; if it is too much effort to do, wave some money at it and someone else will deal with it.) So if say the U.S. pays $500 million to sell some CO2 'credits' to, lets say, Brazil. Brazil takes the $450 million (fucking corruption) and spends most of it on planting a big new rainforest in the middle of nowhere, where they burnt it down 10 years back. They keep the rest. You have just set up an exchange for CO2, again supply and demand. The upside for the U.S. is that some Co2 which it 'owns' or better 'caused' had gone, but so has $500 million. The upside for Brazil is that all the leaders have a whole lot of money, but now they can't burn or cut down this forest for a set ammount of time. Now if there is an international system and standard for the trading of CO2 'credits', then eventually people will cut down on CO2, because it will hit them in the back pocket to pay some 3rd world nation to do it. It is like corparate responsibility only on a global scale; you cause it, you have a responsibility to the rest of the world to deal with it.

A combination of both should cause some reduction in CO2 emmissions. Simply because people pay attention when it hits them in the back pocket, like you pay attention to that leaky tap thats been needing a 50c O ring for a couple of months when the water bill comes in and you see how much it costs you (I did that, its fucking expensive).

And how do you police this, or who does police this? Either there should be an economic alliance, where if one or two nations break the rules, they recieve ever increasing economic sanctions (again, people take notice when it hits them in the back pockets, especially democratic countries, which most of the major emmitors are). Either that or kill all nations and just make one earth alliance. I don't know. But reducing Co2 isn't too hard.

Sorry if I crapped on a bit, but it doesnt make sense if you don't explain it in a bit of detail. Ovbiously it isn't in full detail, but the theory is pretty sound, esp the economic stuff. Trust in Economics, it works. Works for you if you play it right. If you want more detail, or clarification (sorta the same thing), then say so either here or PM if i ever check them.

I have to agree with RW.

It is an international power play. First off unless you missed it They claimed to Know the global temperature for the last 10,000 years. That is pretty arrogant. We just had an Ice age. It was warm before that, much warmer. Even if it was true they are using fear politics. They are basing their estimates on Bogus historical data (created by themselves) tracking it on a straight line to infinity. Did they tell you using their math in a million years the earth will catch fire?
Consider Mt St Hellens. It spewed out more CO2 than all the automobiles had manufactured before that date. So why don't they show us a chart that shows a sharp climatic temperature rise in the next few years? Because there wasn't one. You notice they turn the blame away from the sun? That is because the solar flare cycle has been rising since the 60's. But that couldn't be it.
Is the research equal? NO Who will win the argument? The unfunded scientist swimming upstream or the heavily funded mob of pseudo scientists who think it is justified to tell a little white lie in order to get funding. "After all I am just adding data to the pool". Supporting evidence is hyped while detracting evidence is neatly filed away.
Did you notice the UN is involved? Under UN authority they will be able to fund their expansion in the form of Wink wink fines for not complying. It also is one of the biggest (the environmental studies) cash cows for the scientific community.
It is a bunch of underhanded bull shit!

The scientists are funded either by "philanthropists" or by government grant. There is a growing religion Environmentalism It is nothing new. People have been worshiping the earth beyond written history. They have a strong following in all environmental groups and animal rights groups. The official position of some of these groups is that humans should be eliminated for the good of animals/ the earth. This religion is very popular and vogue among the rich and within the media. Many of these people are in public office and are donors to grant societies eg save the whales, Rain forest protection etc...
There are people who want to restrict the public so when they are hiking they don't have to see tractor gouges and a few stumps. They want to keep you off public land because they don't like tire tracks on "Mother Earth". They will take away your land because there is a nest of "endangered bugs" on it so they can return some more of that good mother earth to their God. It doesn't take much of a browse through the environmental web rings to get that information.
It is very hip and vogue to be on the environmental bandwagon. Most of the people on board don't know who is driving or don't care.

A dairy cow produces 120 pounds of waste every day -- equal to that of two dozen people, but with no toilets, sewers, or treatment plants.

In Lancaster County, Pa., manure from dairy cows is destroying the Chesapeake Bay, and in California, which produces one-fifth of the country's total supply of milk, the manure from dairy farms has poisoned vast expanses of underground water, rivers, and streams. In the Central Valley of California, the cows produce as much excrement as a city of 21 million people, and even a smallish farm of 200 cows will produce as much nitrogen as in the sewage from a community of 5,000 to 10,000 people, according to a U.S. Senate report on animal waste. Raising animals for food requires more than half the water used in the United States and is the biggest polluter of our water and topsoil."

All that just to satisfy our probable needs? After all milk contains....."no fiber or complex carbohydrates and is laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. It's contaminated with cow's blood and pus and is frequently contaminated with pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Dairy products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases."

Where's the benefit in all that when we're surrounded by problems hiding in our refrigerators? I always miss the good shit. I think that this thread was very interesting all the way through. I enjoyed reading it all. Most of the time you get flame wars that start, and they ruin the thread. This was beautiful. *sniff*

I do have one little problem though. I can't decide which shade of purple to paint my walls. I know that women are supposed to be the experts on purple, but you know.
