"A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law."
Call me an idiot.. but i don't see anything along the lines of hostile robot take-over in my future. But.. When i'm ninety and robots run rampant through the street i'll be sure to have some full coverage life insurance that covers robot attack. "Because when a robot has you in his iron grip, you can't get away. Because robots are strong."

This honestly worries me, it seems i can't turn away for five minutes without technologies ugly head rearing itself to scare me...
i mean what the FUCK do we need to clone people for
what the FUCK do we need satelittes in space watching us for??
WE ARE PAYING FOR THE RESEARCH, WE ARE PAYING TO BE SPIED ON....
I think humanity as a whole is simply too fuckng ambitious and lazy.. a dangerous combination that will be our downfall. we make everything easier for ourselves (where able.. i will remain focused on first world countries)... i mean why do we really need the fucking clapper?? too lazy to turn off th LIGHT SWITCH??
Do you wonder why obesity is increasing geoFUCKINGmetrically here?? its because we dont have to get up for anything, everything is automate. When we get robots capable of thought (and teach them to be our butlers) who knows what will happen... i read a mad comic once, that showed everyone in automated wheelchairs, their legs goo from lack of use.. no muscle mass because they never used it.. this was the norm... they depended on a central computer to run everything, depended blindly... and it failed, hilarity ensued http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif but in real life i can see similarities coming to pass... i mean its true.. unused muscles atrophy.. and even if we dont become useless postules.. we will still weaken.. robots will size us up.. they will take over...
anything built by humans will inherently hold our ambition... our disgusting.. misguided ambition..
Fuck humanity i hate it.. i hate the whole fucking world for what we've let ourselves become.. perhaps if we wipe ourselves out with fucking robots, or nukes, or WHATEVER, they wont call me a naysayer anymore and the world will get a second chance....
we're fucked.. they're just trying to speed up the process...
*shakes head in disgust*

hold on, this will be long, I hope...
OK, so a race of intelligent robots who do all the shitty things that we don't want to, sounds good do far. A race of intelligent robots getting pissed off that they do all the shitty work while we sun ourselves and drink Mai Tai's.. not so rosy....
shit, I just want to see the day where man and machine truly mesh, I want to be able to directly interface my mind to the net, as scary as that sounds, I want it. I want to have my muscle fiber laced with hi strength polymers to increase the load they can bear. I want to be able to have a time clock pop up in a H.U.D. in my field of vision, why all of this? Because it's the way... Where we can end up. And if we do, I wanna be there.
now, there is a whole pile of shit that will no doubt come along with all of this, to be sure. But I think I'm ready for it.
clones.. why? What if your loved one had a failing liver, or some other vital organ, and there were no viable donors on the horizon? but the ability to clone a new organ was there far the having.. Lemme se how loud you'd be screaming the evils of eugenics then....
there will no doubt come a day when we are all part man, part blender... I want to see it happen.
fire at will... I'm ready.

The future has boundless possibilites. It boggles the mind.
Personally, I don't fear advancements made in genetics, technology, and artifical intelligence. I welcome the changes.
Let us not forget how economics figure into how new technologies will impact our lives. For example, A fuel-cell revolution is about to take place here in the U.S. This technology has been around for over 100 years. It is only thru recent advancements in technology that fuel-cell applications have become affordable to everyday consumers. Thus, a superior, more enviornmentally friendly method of providing electricity will only come about because the price is now right.
My point: Unless it becomes profitable to develop technology and artificial intelligence that is prone to wiping out the human race, I sincerely doubt it will come about.
I guess I have more faith in my fellow humans than most.

Evolution has given us wonderfully well-designed and complex bodies. This does not mean we cannot design better ones for ourselves. Personally, i want a power fist so i can crush beer cans and the heads of those who oppose me.
This worry that robots will "break their programming" and run amok is silly. We cannot break our own programming, and we're not that well designed. No matter how much will power you have, you will be unable to prevent yourself from blinking when something flies at your head or from getting a stiffy when you see attractive naked women (unless you are gay or a woman, but you get my point).

I wonder if that article in the future will be like the old 50's newsreels predicting the future of today.
I laughed through most of everything that was written, especially the robot laws. Personally, I can't wait until our robot overloards relinquish our painstaking chore of experiencing life for ourselves.

1.) to do absolutely nothing, and yet prosper

Then, we could end racism toward humans, pull together, and live in a Utopian society based on the slavery of miserable machines that are far smarter than their overlords and are stuck in the hell of knowing that and still being unable to fight it.
Sounds like a plan to me! http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

So, subjugate and ridicule another race of robots? Hehe
All kidding aside, I like the subtle point you're making and agree very much.

Concept:
The idea isn't new by any means but I'll present it nontheless:
Greater minds than mine have proposed the possibility of transferring a "mind" into an artificially constructed semblance of the original. For all intents and purposes, the "copy" would perform identically to the "original".
Process:
In order to accomplish a complete transfer, the organic matter must be subjected to quantum processes that render the original material innactive. In other words, a small chunk of your brain is destroyed and recreated in another place using materials that are substantially longer-lived than the original material.
Impression:
Since the original is connected to the duplicate on a quantum level, awareness shifts unnoticeably from one location to another.
Question:
Metaphysical implications abound. If a perfect duplicate of your mind is transferred to an artificial medium as your organically constructed original is deconstructed, is the duplicate "you" or just a perfect simulation?

If you transfer a goldfish from one fishbowl to another, is it still not the same goldfish?

Wow. I killed this thread over a year ago.
*theMAC sprinkles some mudflap flakes in the nice shiny new bowl and watches mudflap swim around and snag the little flakes as they sink to the pebbly bottom.*
There you go, in you nice new bowl.
All clean and plenty of room to swim around.

I brought this thread to the top for several reasons. Most of them you can read for yourself. Others are merely implied. There are a lot of discussions like this one that fell by the wayside because there was just too much to think about at the time.
To be honest, Muddy, I never got around to reading your response. Sorry it's taken so long.
Allow me to change one aspect of my concept. Same situation but the original is not destroyed. Wouldn't you then have two goldfish? One being a perfectly constructed duplicate of the other?

Initially, they would be identical. An original and a clone, if you will. But both will evolve into individuals based on their respective unique experiences. Always sharing many similarities, but individuals, no less.
I wouldn't want any part of that.
