My mother is 65 drawing social security ($557.00 per month) and she ows over $100,000 in hospital bills.. The hospital is using scare tatics by tell my mom that they can take her social security check. IS THAT FUCKING LEGAL? My mom has had two strokes and can not work... They know this but they don't care... Although I don't agree with the Clinton's health care proposals, I do agree that something has to be done....

I'm so glad I don't have to deal with your hospital bullshit.

Would it be possible for Americans to adopt Health Care?

Dear Brother Bumox, (you have been raised to the status of Brother by posting this topic --Congratulations, dear)

First, please accept my heartfelt wishes for your mother to be blessed with good health. You hug your mother every chance you get.

Next, it is my understanding that so long as your mom sends them *something* even if it's $10.00 a month, they can not legally continue the calls, etc...

I reccomend that you look into a nifty phone serve that not only works like caller id, the person calling must announce WHO they are and your mother has the option to either accept the call or not. I've a friend in Atlanta who has this and loves it.

If a bill collector should call my house, which isn't likely as I am fabulously wealthy and dripping with money, but never the less, I think the call would go like this:

(((ring))))

Me: Hello?

Bill Collector: Yes, We are going to take eveything you own and ruin your credit you silly *unholy word removed* you.

Me: Well! The nerve of you!

Bill Collector: *unholy word removed* YOU! You OWE US MONEY AND WE'LL BREAK YOUR LEGS.

Me: Do you know the Lord, Jesus Christ as your personal savior? (And then I would read to them VERY VERY loudly from the Bible)

They would hang up after a few minutes of this I imagine. However, if they should dare call me back I would say:

Me: Dear, with all of the ladylike Baptist manners and charm I can muster up I tell you to *unholy word removed* OFF AND DIE YOU *unholy word removed* EATING SCUM BILL COLLECTOR!

And then I imagine I'd hang up and take the phone off the hook.

Bless you Bumox. I am thinking good thoughts for you and your mother.

If the "no matter how small a payment" deal is valid, ask her to write a check for no more than a few pennies a month. If anyone gives either of you lip over it, explain that it is in retaliation for the scare tactics being used, and that they cant do a damned thing to either of you. Fuck with them back, and use the biggest, best weapon you have at your disposal, your mind....

Many good wishes to you both.

First off does she own a home, car etc...

If not don't sweat it. The $10 payment a month thing sounds good. Try to get the bank to automatically withdraw the funds so you don't have to keep track of it.

If she has fixed assets. Get a lawyer. You will need to transfer her property out of her name. Otherwise when she passes on those bastards will get it all in probate. That is where you would need a lawyer now to make sure your family is protected from her debt.

Paying what you can doesn't stop the bill collectors from calling. My father has been sick most of his life and has run up hospital bills that would choke a tyrannosaurus ten times over. What you got to do is you call the bill collectors and set up some sort of payments to get them off her ass, because they wont stop calling until they feel like they're going to get what is owed to them, regardless if you can or can't pay. I mean, realistically, because they harass people for a living, you can't just cuss em out and get them off your back that way.

Now, the fun thing to do... is to act crazy on the phone with them. And I mean CRAZY crazy. When they call, tell them to hold on a minute then do 3-way calling into some porn 1800 # and listen to the ads and act like you're getting off on it then start barking while they listen in. Or tell them all about your pet rock, and stamp collection. Ask them if they like horror movies and then ask them for their address because you want to come over and "hang out". If they say they live out of state, say "nooooooo problem, I travel a lot and meet new people all the time - because usually after I meet someone they are really scared of me... http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/frown.gif I don't know why though" Then enthusiastically add, "say..., do you like knives!?".

But all kidding aside, call them up and try to work something out because it won't just disappear. Usually they have payment plans you can do that don't tax you into the poor house. Good luck man.
