<font color=pink>Your name gets called, you get your diploma, you’re ready to start reaming your rewards of your 4 years earning a degree. You throw together your resume in confidence, distribute it throughout the country and wait endlessly for a response. NOTHING. Finally, after sending out countess resumes and seriously considering a Hasty Market position, the phone rings. The job sounds great and related to your field, the interview goes well, and alas an offer. Your blood is fucking pumpin’, you’re ready, this is what you’ve been working for, this is the first step to the rest of your life. One of the biggest most important moments, the real job. What comes next, is something you never expected or anticipated, “the” letter states a starting salary of $23,000 a year with limited benefits. WHAT THE FUCK? This means having to live like a student for the rest of your bloody life. You had to scrounge through 4 years of university and now you have to scrounge some more.

This is not the exception in Canada, it is the rule. More and more new university graduates are finding themselves in the above position. How can a company actually believe a person can live on that kind of a salary? In many cases your student loan is larger than your salary. An option that is becoming far more appealing is to take your educated knowledge south of the boarder. I had the opportunity to meet with such an individual who wants to be known as “MAX POWER”. Here’s a quick synopsis of Max’s situation.

Upon graduating from the University of Guelph with a joint degree, computers and environmental sciences, Max, landed a job in Ontario earning the whooping sum of $23,000 a year. After having to live in garage for a year to support themselves (in the winter as well) , NO WORD OF A LIE, he said “fuck it, I deserve better, I’m good enough, strong enough, and gosh darnit people like me”. Max began distributing his resume throughout the U.S. Within a week a phonecall, and within two, a new job, relocation package, full travel expenses and benefits. Now the best part, a 250% salary increase. That’s going from $23,000 to $83,000 in Canadian funds. Ladies and gentleman, I would like to introduce the Brain Drain.

I had the opportunity to sit with Max while casually choreographing my sister’s dominatrix routine. I asked him which country he enjoyed more, he said, “I very much like Canada better, Canada in terms of everything the whole crime rate, where I grew up, its what I know. I didn’t want to leave by far, the reason for moving was not to move to a better country, the country itself did not appeal to me. It was the financial state of the US, economic state, is what motivated me to move and prompted my decision”.

He later when on to say, lives are so economically driven that he didn’t feel he had a choice, he felt he was forced to leave, offers were too tempting and Canada didn’t care, nor could he find anything appealing here.

The irony in all of this I find is how U.S. comedy pokes a lot of fun at Canada, making Canada look unintelligent when in actuality, by our university grads they are causing our country to fit their stereotype.

The fault does not lie with the U.S. for making more attractive offers, the fault lies in Canada for not taking more action and trying harder to retain its own graduates.

The got the below article out of the Toronto star's business section today.

Hello Kaye dear. I am your Sister Taffy, Biblical and Moral Authoritorian, and I would like to reply to your message.

In another forum there was a conversation about careers, education, etc... and I made mention that my own degree (BA Hospitality Admin) was virtually worthless. Other than a brief internship with two hotel chains I fled and never looked back. The degree itself is all that matters, or so I have been told, but some of the most successful people I've ever known were without even so much as a high school diploma. Anyway, I agree that it seems like you have been *UNholy word removed* by the system. You feel like many that it's all been in vain. Don't. You will land a job to your liking and with pay that you deserve. However, unless you are extremely lucky and/or know the right people it will take a while. This doesn't help now but I know where you are coming from and lend you a designer clad shoulder to cry on. Just be careful not to stain the fabric with any tears. Chanel is a bitch to have cleaned.

Knee deep in the blood of the sinless lamb,

Sister Taffy

<font color=pink>I appreciate your reply, however this has not happened to me. I am not finished school but I will be moving to the States in September, if things go well, to finish my schooling there. I don't know how long I will stay but I'll probably stay down there because of this very issue and of course because my significant other lives there as well.

ps: I hate the United States.

Kaye,

I hope that your plans work the way you want and that you will find that not all of the US is so terrible. Yes, there are some serious problems but now that that DEMONCrat Bill Clinton is out of office and George the "BUSH is on fire for Jesus" is coming to office, things are going to change.

He is going to clean up the trash and make perversion, LIEberal thinking, baby killing, and pagan ways a thing of the past.

Oh.

I can't wait.

I'm currently looking at getting a job as a junior at Macquarie Investment bank. Shitty pay, $22k a year (but with damn good benefits), pretty boring job, but they'll pay for me to go through university, saving me about $50k, and i'm pretty much gauranteed to get a promotion within a year of starting.

If i get it, that is. But apparently i'm more than qualified. So fingers crossed.

The reason the salaries are so low and there is really good healthcare in Canada is the government is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Kay what amount of tax do you expect to pay in Canada?

A free market is more efficient because it is driven by greed, a useful human emotion. Bureaucracys are inherently inefficient. That is the only reason we aren't typing this forum in Russian. If they had the cash they would have kicked all of our asses! Now the poor bastards are literally starving.

Why do I hate the US? Because its dirty and dangerous. No one owns a gun and keeps one in their houses in Canada.

The fact that citizens here in the US own guns is not what makes this a dangerous and dirty place. What does make this country those things are the people that we own guns to protect ourselves from.

It may all be a pile of rhetoric, but the only reason I would want to own ANY kind of weapon, would be to keep me and mine safer from any criminal element that would seek out to make victims of us.

Too many people the world over are more than willing to take what they want, instead of working for it and earning it. It's not really one country more than another that this happens in, but more of a species wide problem.

Let me see if I can tie this back into the original topic. It comes down to education. Humans, by way of human nature, are prone to be scummy little creatures that war and fight for petty things. Unless we are taught to overcome our nature, we succumb to it. Now, if that means that I have to teach myself to work towards rewards, and earn the finer things I want in my life, why should it be any different for anyone else? And why should I allow those who don't want to work as hard as I choose to the liberty of taking what's mine without grievous repercussions?

Sorry, I am one of the LEAST patriotic Americans you will every encounter, but the argument that guns and such make this a shitty country is just ludicrous to me. And I will defend my stance on this as best I can. My goal is not to change your views on this, only to allow you to see mine in a more crystal fashion.

I admit Kaye If I didn't live here I would probably hate the US and our crappy foreign policy. That part of my country I do not agree with.
My reference to taxes was the fact that Canadians pay nearly twice the taxes that Americans do. That is why The wages are lower there your government beats the companies you would be working for to death with taxes (Robbing Peter to pay Paul). That is how your free health care is paid for and the other numerous social services provided by the government.
I am not bashing Canada, or you, sweet one.
I was merely trying to lend my perspective onto your situation.

At present i'm on a marginal tax rate of about 30%, so not too bad compared to you Americastani pigdogs. However, every dollar i earn above $50 grand would get taxed at a rate of 49%. You DO have a progressional tax system in canada, don't you?

And i prefer a gunless society. But i also have to say with the shape america's in, i wouldn't go there unless i had a gun. Why? Because the few criminals in australia who actually have guns are smart enough that they wouldn't waste their time bothering me, whereas the any psycho in america can get his hands on a gun. So, in america, the widespread presence of guns amongst the criminal population basically neccessitates a well armed population. America hasn't progressed much since the Wild West days.

Do you really believe all the propaganda you hear about the US, prepetuated by the media?

Certain areas are dangerous, granted, but most of this country is perfectly safe to live in and visit. I live in a town where Ive never been afraid to walk the streets at night or felt the need to own a gun.

Does the rest of the world only hear whats wrong with the US? I am curious. Are we only seen in the light of our cultural export? TV, fastfood, gangs et al?

Mr. Snrub
01-19-2001, 07:12 AM
Hell, when things are fine and dandy there's no story, so probably yeah. But ALTHOUGH there are areas like yours, there are areas which are more dangerous than downtown Beirut. And that's the issue.

Anyone ever seen that series Americana by Jonathon Ross?
