View Full Version : add this up
The other day the news was on while I ate my lunch.
The first story was about child abuse.
The abusers had already been arrested twice for abusing the abusee.
Then the last story was about an FBI report.
It said that due to a slowing economy and rising prison releases crime would go up.
Now do the math.
And think long and hard about the relationship between those two stories.
Crime is perpetrated by criminals.
Your a criminal when you do something that is against the law.
So some people are criminals and some are not....
When criminals are in jail or employeed they don't commit crimes.....
This should eliminate them from the criminal list but it doesn't because they have the propensity to be a criminal.
Genetics and environment.
So...who among us is a criminal?
You apparently can't NOT be one if you ARE one.
BUT, why is it that when more criminals are in jail less crimes are committed?

Feh, I'm a criminal. I make no claims otherwise...the records are sitting in the police station to prove it. Despite the fact that they will be eliminated when I turn 18, I will still be a criminal. Hell, you're all criminals, too. If you've ever jaywalked, stuck a quarter on the railroad tracks or went a mile over the speed limit, you've broken a law. 'Fraid these days it's hard not to be one.

Interesting post, EA. You didn't provide details of your juvenile record. Hence, I don't know why you consider yourself to be a criminal.
For what it's worth, the jaywalking, speeding, etc. you mentioned aren't truly crimes in the classic sense. They're simply not in the same category as misdemeanors such as petty larceny, assault and battery, etc. Although it can get confusing if one thinks too much about it, the distinction is frequently made on whether mens rea is an essential element of the complaint.
Amen.

child abusers (sexual or non-sexual) should be burned on a stake. That is the least thing I would do to someone if they EVER hurt my little sister. >:| They would pray for a rock to fall on their head and crush them. They would PRAY for being given the privilege of burning to death slowly, they would PRAY that I would just cut them multiple times with a razor then roll them in rock salt, they would pray for such an easy punishment as that.
I must agree w/ JEB....Amen.

Child abusers have no right to abuse children, just as you would have no right to take his life in revenge.
I'd guess you were from Texas, if you weren't from "Not Ireland."

It's not necessarily what I got caught for...it's what I didn't.
I've done B&E's, held stolen property, caused property damage in excess of $500 at least..I suspect some of it was more like $1000, arson, grand theft auto, possession of narcotics....like I said, I'm a criminal. Simply never got caught for the serious shit.
Add wiretapping to the equation and we go federal. Harassment and stalking, too..though those were mainly because my friend and I pranked the living fuck out of a guy.

What you have not considered in your equation are the amount of people guilty of things that shouldn't be counted as crimes in the first place.
And to expound on what escape artist said (and on what I said in part):
"Do you know how often the average citizen runs afoul of the law?"
"Beats me. Once a week?"
"Once every twelve minutes."
---Commandments
(The actually statistic is once every 35 minutes or so but you get the idea)
There's a helluva lot more to say on many more aspects of the thread, but that's what I feel like throwing out at the moment.

You know you're a criminal when your thoughts revolve around committing a crime.

was going to use these in a new thread, but thought perhaps they tie in here...
these are simply a handful of sentencing examples in Texas that i encounter every day. i chose the most extreme to make a point, but they are unfortunately more akin to the norm:
*Agg Assault w/Deadly Weapon 2yrs
*Att Sexual Assault of a Child 3yrs
*Indecency With a Child 3yrs
*Injury to a Child 3yrs
*Murder 10yrs
*Murder 18yrs
*Agg Robbery 10yrs
as compared to:
*Poss Marijuana 20yrs
*Burg Habitation 15yrs
*Poss Marijuana 15yrs
*Forgery by Poss 20yrs
*Failure to Pay C/S Tax 10yrs
*Poss w/Intent to Del Cocaine 20yrs
How does a state allow & perpetuate the lesser sentencing of violent offenders?!
Lesser sentences equals less prison time & earlier release on parole than most non-violent offenders...which equals more violent offenders on the streets, in our communities committing more & more crimes.
it is a viscious cycle.

it is insane to think that i could be put in jail for the rest of my natural life in texas for possession. of WEED. stupid. i can no longer see any social justification for continuance of the drug war. legalization would do a lot to reducing the number of "criminals", in the context mac tonight is referring to (don't subvert this topic any more than i just did, please. if anyone wants to talk legalization and whatnot, start another. out of respect for the orignal intent).
so yeah, i'm a criminal, but i would never have denied that.

Do you know if those are typical sentences? If so how?
I can definetly see your point and it is very alarming. I guess I just assumed Texas was a tough on violent crime state. I must admit I don't know the average sentencing in California.

Drugs are a supply and demand kinda thing. Tougher law ain't gonna do jack.

As for drugs,
I find it ridiculus that every time a murderer gets convicted his multiple appeals make the news.
But someone gets busted for dope and goes to jail for 20 years with out a peep in the paper.
Drugs are most DEFINATELY supply and demand.
As for my original statement.
This is the second or third story I've heard on the news that says:
"Certain people are criminals and when they're in jail you are safe."
I find that to be an ignorant belief.
We are being told that so we will believe it.
Drug users were not criminals before the drug laws. Does that mean they were OK people then?
Did they magically become BAD?
Or is there something else?
As an adendum to my original post:
Today on the news:
Tom Dashel was quote as "yelling"
(something to the effect of)
*Congress will not take a break until the patients bill of rights is passed*
In other words. Before we leave you will have more laws.
I think I'll send an e-mail to my congressman.
