It is hardly the politest of expressions - but Yukiko Matsumoto and her friends are known in Japan as "parasite singles".

They all work for a living - but like millions of others they continue to live with their parents into their late 20s and 30s.

It is part of trend towards ever later marriage and it is a major factor behind Japan's falling birth rate.

Yukiko's family home in a Tokyo suburb provides her with a comfortable base. She could barely afford a small room in the city on her salary.

'Man of means'

She says it will take a man of means to tempt her away from the attractions of home.

"Some of my married friends have moved to much smaller houses. I don't really want to sacrifice my comfort, so I'd have to marry someone who earns twice as much as I do," she said.

"At the moment I can spend my money on anything I like."

Far from pressuring her to leave, her mother is sympathetic.

"Today's generation is different. We had to marry by a certain time with a certain person from a certain social group. I don't see why women today should hurry," she says.

Loss of spending power

Professor Masahiro Yamada - who coined the phrase parasite single - says their numbers are set to grow.

"They suffer a dramatic fall in their standard of living if they get married. On average they lose two thirds of their spending money. And they also have to do housework. The gap between the two lifestyles is growing."

Single women remain in the workforce for much longer than their married counterparts. Surveys show they are the most contented demographic group in Japan.

It is not going to get any easier for Japanese men to persuade them to give it all up.

This reminds me of Vancouver.......

I think society has evolved to the point where from here on in it is going to be one big downward spiral.
Fuck, with all our human rights, battle of the sexes, and ability to live how we want to live, what have we ended up with? A world rapidly starting to be full of self serving individuals so concerned about the rights of the self rather than the needs of society that we are practically regressing to a state of nature.

In the state of nature the 'life of man would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short'

Dog eat fucking dog and screw thy neighbour. Of course, you can't lead a solitary life (physically) when you still live with Mummy and Daddy - but the mind set is definately developing for future generations.

Bah, I'm in a cynical mood http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/frown.gif

in our quest for personal freedom, we've built a prison. it is time for us to realize that we are no more important than anything or anyone else. i am one life of trillions, and my comfort is not a universal necessity.

this is what i see to be the flaw in our modern philosophy. we have sought to understand and "empower" the self, and this has resulted not in understanding the fellow man, but in disregarding him and thinking only of your own flawless happiness. don't have a father? NO FATHER'S DAY! IT MAKES ME SAD! the minority should have no say in a democracy, should it? or am i misunderstanding the whole system?
in thinking that the individual is important we have government taking the top 1% of society into account when making decisions, because they deserve the breaks the poor man does. is the rich man's money worth any less? fuck yes.

rambling! anyway, my point: we are members of a society, we share our countries and homes and world with other people. this rugged individualist shit doesn't work anymore.

i had nothing to say regarding the article, sorry. it all relates, anyway.

Indeed, in this day and age the powers that be have a vested interest in drawing out the maturation process--you are convinced by advertisments and the media of what is "fun" and convinced to stay adolescent longer than people used to. Nowadays people expect to be "kids" until their late twenties/early thirties. People need to make a conscious effort to grow up http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

Finally, someone who reads John Locke and understands both sides of his implications of society, law and order.
