"Foodaholics dream is of eatching whatever they want but not gaining weight. As anyone with a weight problem knows all to well: If you let down your dietary guard too long or too often, you will get fat. A study from the Baylor College of Medicine showed that someday foodaholics might be able to have their cake and eat it too. They found an enzyme in mice called acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2 (ACC2) that helped the animals control their body weights. The scientist developed genetically altered mice [I dont know how I feel about this] that didn't produce ACC2. Although the mice ate whatever they wanted (40% more food than the control mice), they were actually thinner than the mice without the altered gene. Blocking the gene caused the cells to burn fat faster than normal. The researchers are currently developing drugs that will block ACC2 in humans and hope to have an effective weight loss product in 5 years. When and if this hits the market, would you take it? What would be your concerns? How would you feel about your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse taking it?

From experiance at work, I've seen that not just everyone who is "over-weight" feels compelled to take weight-loss products.

I personally would be bothered by it. I don't like anything going in and messing up my genes, or blocking certain ones.

I would wonder what long term effects it has potential to cause. What are your opinions?

In a way, it bothers me that they are genetically modifying animals. I suppose I have been blind to this before, but contemplating the idea of this is unsettling for me.

Could we eat all the genetically modified mice that we want? http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/wink.gif

The diet industry is a multi-million dollar one, instead of the public being well educated about what to eat, when to eat and how to get off their butts and move, they would rather sell us a quick fix.

They've been genetically modifying stuff for years, vegetables and so on, they just don't like to tell you about it.

Hell no I won't take that drug!

I'd rather them just clone my body, grow it to a physiological age of 15 years, and then transplant my brain into it. I'll start all over again from scratch and this time, when I hit my sexual prime, I'll know what the hell I'm doing. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

There's nothing I would love more than to lose weight.

But I will never take any kind of pills or alter my genes in order to do it. Most of this stuff is so new that they haven't had an oppurtunity to study long-term effects. No point in losing weight now if I'll die five years later.

I of course have a problem with this.

Look at Europeans. Look especially at the French we all despise so much (heh). There are very few fat French people, and yet they eat much richer food than we do--because of a few dietary differences and a little exercise. But the weight gain/loss industry isn't about to tell you THAT...

You point out the fact that there has been no long range testing of this drug. Unfortunately, for grossly overweight people, the not-so long term studies do show a trending pattern. Death. Any drug which could help those individuals who really need help is a plus. Strict guidelines need to be followed. Part of the problem with the Phen-Fen phenomina was that every person that thought they needed to lose five pounds was able to get the prescription.

There are also many people out there that "eating right and getting off their butts" just doesn't cut it. Every day scientists are linking more and more weight issues with genetics.

You skinny people have lots to fear if we fat people lose weight. Know how your boyfriend / girlfriend always confides in us because "we're so nice?" Wait until they see that those of us that are soo beautiful on the inside can also be that way on the outside.

I've always felt that we are the guienia (sp?) pigs when it comes to medications.

Take Prozac and other SSRI's for instance. The long term effects include; the breaking down of the neurotransmitter that is the pre-cursor to seratonin, facial disfiguration, muscle tics, sexual dysfunction, periodic limb movement/full body twitching and many others.

Cocaine was a common "cure-all" that caused addiction. Even Freud was a fan of Cocaine.

Valium and other benzodiazopines (sp?) are addictive.

Phen-Phen broke down the heart.

Ephedra is still being debated.

Asprin thins the blood and causes ulcers.

The list goes on and on. Simply put, it doesn't matter if we turn down one thing for the other. We are and always will be a version of the genetically modified rats in the lab.

I have no idea what spawned this mini-rant.

There is one single agenda that all of these crazy fucking policies and products promote...

Population Control...reduce life expectancy...etc.

Get a clue...and keep asking why...

Your body has been designed NOT to starve to death.

The only kicker to that is that in our design to reproduce effectively it was understood that environmental pressures would remove all those flawed or inadequate.

Now we get born, live and walk around....

Many of us, all fucked up.
