That is an excellent question. There are lots of definitions for it.

For myself, it means that my own happiness is best served by insuring the happiness as well as I am able of the person(s) I love. Whatever that requires, to the best of my ability, I will do.

For me to love someone is for me to take great pleasure in that person's presence, and to find pleasure as well as pain in their own pleasure and pain.

Simply put, I "love" those in whose emotions I have a vested interest.
