View Full Version : a wee bone to pick...
Lately I have noticed alot of posts containing little more than a url to click on to go read a story at another site.
This drives me crazy.
Usually, there is no indication what I will seeing once I get there so more often than not I will not waste time going.
I think it would be a nice consideration to your potential reader to at least give a brief summary of what the story is about. Just a few sentences giving the gist of it. You can even copy and paste from the story if it's too hard to write.
But chances are, if you didn't take the time to read the whole piece yourself and can't tell me what it's about, I am not going to bother either...
umm, just my two-cents worth. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

I was thinking the samet hing earlier. Due to the onslaught of topics with said links in them, i dont think this post could have come at a better time. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif It is rather annoying...so out of consideration just let us know beforehand what we're reading http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

A bit of commentary would be a good addition to the link as well.

we arent saying that its spam..its just that sometimes we may not be interested in the topic and why bother with it if its not something we are interested in. We arent asking for a 3 page report on the subject..just a line or two of info

I automatically presume that any link posted by a tribal WILL BE worth my time and attention. I have clicked on dozens of said links and I have yet to be convinced otherwise.
I am SOOOO sorry if a link didn't generate your interest and wasted your precious time. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/rolleyes.gif

That's not too much to ask for.
But keep in mind that often the poster wants to see what others think before they return and give their POV. If I post a link and then give you my commentary you may not review the info and just argue or agree with my synopsis. That's what happens on the News at night, which is why I don't watch it.
But a good point.

I agree with you for the most part, but I think what keeps people from giving us that bit of info in a post are not those reasons, but just downright laziness.
Seriously I never read them, I pop in, see the link and go elsewhere to read something that someone took effort with...
and mudflap, while you may know the people here well enough to make a judgement call on them and trust that they are going to post a link worthy of your time, newer people do not, and as this site is growing you need to keep that in mind. If you NEVER follow the link to read the article, how do you know that the link wasn't worth your precious time? Do you NEVER open presents because they don't have a card attached telling you what's inside? Do you NEVER read a novel because the title doesn't tell you how the story ends?
I never said I knew the people that post here. I said I RESPECTED them. I know of what they post here. I have LEARNED that the links in question are worth reading because, unlike you, I was open minded enough to give them a shot. Unlike you, I did not automatically assume they were not worth my time nor did I assume the individuals responsible for posting these links were not putting forth any real effort.
Now, for your "newer people" comment: You insinuate that I'm not giving the more recent participants of this forum a fair shake. In reality, what you are doing is asking other participants to modify their postings to suit YOUR wishes. That doesn't seem fair to me.
When it comes down to it, you're being closed-minded and trivial.
Before you claim something is uninteresting and a waste of your time, make sure that it actually is. Your entire argument is based on assumptions and is therefore null and void.
By they way, I'm happy that you have decided to participate here. This place would suck BIG TIME if everyone agreed on everything. Luckily for me, I'm disagreed with often. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm going to have to agree with mudflap to an extent.
Personally, I find whatever a member has to say, is intriuging. I've never been shown different. Of course, I have been known to like really odd and bizzare things. heh..
I also like the element of surprise. If for some reason I don't like the page, its not a big deal for me to close the window.
I do tend to forget that the whole world isn't on cable or higher, and for some, loading pages is a bitch.
As far as people not clicking on the links because they aren't sure its interesting.. pfft. Their loss, not mine. Kind of like the present analogy as well as insight to the person's interests or their opinion of your posts.
I like to click on the links, make my own opinion and then read everyone else's so my view is unbiast instead of it being tainted by everyone else's perspective. I think that if you take the time to read the rest of the posts you may see exactly what the topic is. (or even the title)
Some say its laziness that a description isn't added. I think that its simply we like the element of surprise, so we think everyone else does as well.
I do however, understand that for some, it may be a bitch to load the pages, or descretion may be needed, so I will make an effort to put a description or something.

If it was a news story, people used to just copy and paste the main part of the story and provide a link to the rest. Honestly that seems like a more logical way to do things.
I just think people need to give a small description instead of "CLICK HERE!" Even if its just "Click here for a cool flash thingie!" At least then the people who are working know what it is they're in for.
