View Full Version : Childhood pain

I learned a lot as a kid. Sometimes those lessons were particularly unpleasant.
Take, for instance, the day my second-grade friend and I were walking home from school. Just before class ended, our teacher handed out eggs of Silly Putty as a reward for the day's achivements.
As T and I discussed 10-dimensional space-time (or what color crayon to color clouds; I forget) I did my best not to step on cracks in the sidewalk. I wanted my mommy's spine intact when I got home.
In mid-sentence, T interrupted the conversation with an observation:
"Mikey! Do you still have your Silly Putty?"
"Sure." I showed it to him as proof.
"Take it out of the egg and put it on your head!" He showed me that he had already begun this experiment. "It feels neat!"
From the apparent excitement in his eyes, I determined that he would not be the only one in show-and-tell with this knowledge. I complied.
After getting my ass busted and my head shaved, I learned that T didn't want to be the only bald kid in class the next day.
That's what friendship is all about. Share the pain.

I bet you got the "If your friend jumped off a cliff" speech.
Silly putty is not hair gel.

Woof.
If it's so sick, why are you laughing?

Yes I did and no it isn't.
Neither, for that matter, is the contents of Stretch-Armstrong.
More likely that not, I've been witness to one of the reasons this toy is no longer on the market.
For those of you who don't remember him, Stretch had a highly elastic skin and was filled with an extremely thick liquid with the consistency of distilled maple syrup. How do I know of his contents? Again, experimentation.
Two twelve-year-old "doctors" presided over the autopsy. Tests were performed:
1. Tastes sweet
2. Runs slower than anything seen before
3. Doesn't stick to your hands
Conclusion:
1. It's soft
2. It's non-toxic
3. It won't stick to your hair like Silly-Putty if you throw it high enough and bounce it off your skull.
Result: I watched my friend throw the mass as high as he could and try to bounce it off of his head.
I'm still laughing! Out cold.
I decided that this particular experiment should not be repeated. Doctors agree.

True again.
Like "Love", "Friendship" has many meanings.
Perhaps a thread about "True Friendship" should be started.
Don't look at me! I just light these matches. Someone else can set the fire.

I have found that the only substitute for alcohol that will get some one to do stupid, crazy shit is a good friend.
Your friends will let you piss in your own suitcase if they think it's funny.

OK this isn't really about friends.
Pain makes you remember.
I have some bizarre memories from my childhood.
#1 18 months old My family comes in to give me a stuffed monkey in the hospital (hernia operation) The crib was roughly the size of a boxing ring with 20 foot walls. NO shit 18 months!
#2 2 years old my dog got out of the yard and headed down the street I called to him over and over he did not come back.
#3 3 1/2 years old My cousin and I sat on a fire ant hill and shoved sticks into it pissing off the ants. By the time they started biting we were covered DUH! Long warm bath and lots of calamine.

you guys have a pretty good hand on this friendship thing, and i admire you for that.
i have told everyone that Mudflap is my best friend, but it's hard for me to understand exactly what that means. we are alike, just like we are different. i feel that i can depend on him for anything i ask, and he feels(or he should)the same about me.
but all my life i've had friends, damn good ones, and somewhere along the line, for some unforeseen reason, you lose touch. i really don't know how to have the friendship you guys are referring to. my best friend came and went when i was grade school, same in jr. high, and high school. i don't expect to loose Mudflap as a best friend or loose him as a friend period, but after so many have come and gone, the closeness you guys demonstrate leaves me a little envy, and i bow to you all.

Don't try to analyze your friendships.
Some last. Some fail. Either way, it's your choice as to how they should proceed.
If you have a friend right now, show your appreciation while you can.

I didn't say you were a lump of balsa wood. I merely implied your head had a cork-like buoyancy about it sonny boy!
Get a slide rule and I will respect you...or a pocket protector from any aerospace company.
You can just march your bitter little ass up to your room. Don't make me get my belt!

K&E's are for pussys! It isn't even a Decilon! Nice case *DROOL*.
At least it isn't a Mannheim and it appears to be a Log Log Duplex. I suppose it would work in a pinch. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
The Post Versalog, God's mathematical wand! Bamboo is far superior to Mahogany.
I suppose you have my respect my Buoyant friend. At least you come from good stock.

Do you mind if I ask who Johnny? as this post also makes me think of my best friend who is no longer living.
But I agree with this thread and with the meanings of "true friendship" as even though she is no longer here, she meant the world to me and was by far the truest friend i have ever had and ever will have. complete comfort... no longer have these things from her... but the memories keep her alive and our friendship still in bloom!

Billyman, I have many aquaintances but very few people whom I would call friends. You, Billyman, are at the top of the list. Do you know that almost everytime I talk to my father, he asks about you? He realized years ago that I don't include very many people in my life, but he knows that you are in there. To be truthful, I don't know if I would still be around this part of NC if I hadn't met you shortly after I had relocated here back in '94. Thanks for always being there for me buddy. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif
By the way, I don't begrudge you for spending most of your free time with HER, (she's a lot better looking than me, no doubt!) but once a month I'd appreciate if you'd kick her to the curb so we could have a few beers together and just hang out. You did that for me a couple of months ago. Remember? I didn't ask you to, but you saw that I needed it and you were there for me. That meant everything to me. So how about it?
Anyway, it's been suggested here at THT recently that we should all take the time to let our friends know how much they mean to us. I hope I have done that very thing right now.
