Took me a minute to get the gag but it doesn't really surprise me that Americans don't know geography.

Might be funny if I got anything other than an html page with a blank video box for clicking it. What is the trick to getting these to play?

Subliminal message in that video: Australia is the source of all the world's problems.

I've conducted a little personal poll. I didn't intend to publish figures so I didn't track them.

I've talked to some people about H5N1. I've conveyed what I've "seen" and asked for opinions.

Three examples:

"Oh, that stuff just works on birds. I won't catch it."
"I already know how the world will end. I have faith in the Bible. I'm not worried."
"I only know what's on the news."

In each case, I tried to explain what was going on and how they could get more information if they wanted it.

Some don't. Some do.

In reality, the H5N1 virus doesn't worry me much. Two reasons - its current vector is still avian - no evidence exists of it transitioning to a human to human airborne pathogen. While severe for an influenza virus, its virulence is low.

60 to 100 million dead out of 6 billion? Less than 1 to 1.4% of total world population. Not a statistically significant event in human history. Now, were it like the first pass of Yersinia pestis through the Old World, I'd be more concerned. 30 to 40% mortality is a more worrisome number.

Still only half of what is needed, at that.
