five years and$912 millionafter it began work on the X-33, NASA has canceled funding for the cooperative effort with Lockheed Martin. X-33 was to be the prototype for a reusable launch vehicle, called VentureStar, that would be more affordable and reliable than the space shuttle.
like any reusable single-stage-to orbit vehicle, VentureStar would have required a structure that was extremely light and strong. the spacecrafts designers planned to reduce weight by making the propellant tanks part of the vehicle's airframe, and using a lightweight composite material instead of aluminum. but the tanks did not hold up under pressure testing. NASA is funding development of other launch vehicle concepts. but a replacement for the space shuttle won't fly until 2015 at the earliest.
let's make sure i understand this correctly, after 912 million$[/b and what should be a miner problem to these engineers, simpliy because they ran into a problem from the design department, they are going to throw it away??!!!can you honestly tell me that it is cheaper to start over than to step back, regroup, and work with what you have, [b]oh give me a fucking break!!how stupid is that?! kinda makes you wonder why they would even turn down $20 million from some guy with way to much money, just to exit the atmosphere for a while.:O
