View Full Version : The Silver Marker
Hey Skalie, I don't think anyone is mad at you or anything like that I know I'm not. But could you let us know where you last saw it? I'm just curious about where it got off to... I can come up with so many more stories about how it grew legs/ was snatched by bunnies/ imploded, if I have an idea of how it started.
Was it in the mail room when you looked in on it? From your post it sounded like it wasn't there.

I left it with a pair of homosexuals in a pet shop in the Netherlands.

I guess this means whoever has the "spare hat", get it polished and cranked up and get this puppy started again, since mr scales is being a bit childish.

In simple point of fact, skalie passed the hat on appropriately. The individual who has either lost it and declines to admit it, or for some other reason declines to forward it, is Skeet. While both are strange, skalie is a has-been ex-pat kiwi sheep-raper wannabe clog (dutchman), while Skeet is doing I've no idea what in Juneau, Alaska. Very different people.

i want the god-damned fucking hat found, very quickly.
failure to do so just MIGHT set me right the fuck off - and in that case, i am going to hunt down the last owner and beat the piss out of them.
either get it sent, or maybe i'll start taking donations for "bounty hunter" - and failing that, maybe i can just do it myself.
that god-damned hat WILL get sent, however...one way or the fucking other. i took it on and re-sent it whilst broke; i want no stupid excuses.
you make that little old hat get mailed, skeet, or i'll play transcontinental chicken with you. you just put that thing in a box and mail it, you cheap piece of shit.
last i checked, stuffing it back in the same box was well and good for everyone so far. postage isn't exactly life-destroying in terms of costs.
send it along, bud - or probably, one of us will come and get it.
you asked for the thing, as i recall. you took on the responsibility of kabooming it to someone else.
i suggest you get to work real quick. moreso with me still involved. this bothers me. you just send that hat out, bud.
have a nice fucking day.

While I do want to see the hat found and sent on, I suspect that threats of this type are utterly counter-productive.
If it is lost, own up to that fact Skeet, and say so. If it is simply a matter of being really busy and just not prioritizing getting it forwarded, please re-think the priority you put on it. If it was in fact mailed, and has disappeared in the postal system, no blame attaches, just please let us know.
In other words: What did you do, if anything, with the hat, and when?
Simple question, needs a straight answer.
Please and thank you? Please?

yeah, i'll agree, not the brightest thing to do. then again, i'm jason, and jason tends not to be entirely connected with reality most of the time. i = a thing of inarticulate evil. :)
i had huge flamewars and cool memories over that stupid fucking hat, and even my frequently drunk, mean, half-psycho, incoherent, financially destitute ass managed to put it in the mail.
failure to do so by other involved parties really pisses me the everloving fuck off on principles.

I suspect, at this point, that our wishes in this matter are of little consequence and will shortly be entirely moot.
I spoke to Skeet today, VERY briefly, in IRC. He said that things in the northlands are not the best, and he is moving immediately. Where, he didn't say.
If the Hat went astray in the mail, any trace must be requested by the sender at the post office it was sent from. If that has not been done (as I suspect it has not), then it is most likely not going to happen.

Having talked to a couple people, I don't reckon I can beat Skeet with a stick.
Whatever happens, happens. I reckon with a little effort and some social engineering here and there, said hat can be found...one of those cases where I'm not going to the effort personally to do it, though. It's possible, however.

Mike's birthday party was last night. I was gonna ask if she'd *take one for the team* and donate. But I fell asleep after 16 hours at the airport, and didn't make it. But I did wake up in time to try to catch the next flight out, six hours later... I'm still in Portland. But my new goal is to be rich enough to not ever fly on a buddy pass again.

The pictures (under the current rules) would be entertaining. Should there be an addendum that includes shaving? I'm not sure if the Hat concept would be properly adhered to if children are subjected to images of back-hair slightly obscured by women's clothing.
No matter what happens, the Hat is a thought made real. Try not to piss on Cruise's grandfather by replacing it.
Replicating the thought in another form, however, is another "story".
I'd sign and take pics.
Remember first that this is a social experiment. Passing still requires delivery of the Hat to its destination.
Help whomever has it if for no other reason than to move it along.
That includes previous recipients.
Fortunately, they already "got it".

The Hat was located a while back. It's supposedly on its way to Barbie but I had to act as an intermediary. Apparently there are some who aren't comfortable (for good reason) with posting their physical addresses.
Welp, Skeet contacted me and I contacted someone who realy should have the Hat on their head. In doing so, I had to provide Skeeter with a maiing address.
I don't expect bad things to happen from this transaction; not the participants of the transaction at least.
I DO, however, expect verbal lashings for my short-sightedness.

Be concise:
Is tHe Hat gone or do we just need to replace the markers?
If it's the Hat, PM me with details.
I promise not to bitch you out. This was an experiment. I need info.
The markers are easily replaced (and probably dried out by now).
As a "coincidence":
I wear a copy of Teh Hat (sans sigs) regularly.
Yesterday, out of the blue, Holly asked the following:
"Dad, when is that hat coming back to us?"
It took me a while to add 3+97 before I went "Huh?"
"That one", she said as she pointed at my head.
"OH! Well, Sweets, it's supposed to go all over the world. It'll come back here if it has to but we'll probably never see it again. It was a gift, not a present."
I think she got it. There was some more talk but that's the jist.
If it's stifled, that's part of it. If it gets lost, same thing.
Either way, it has a story and I'd like to hear that story in as much detail as is comfortable to the recipient/sender.
Let me know as much as you can.

itz b here :D
It's funny how a thing can influence thoughts. First it was the whole "it's here" giddy stuff when the mail-female brought it to the door today (yesterday now).
Instead of opening it up right away, I decided to keep it in situ for a few hours. Kids and deliveries at this time of year tend to make for hoopla that's difficult to control without harsh tones. They were cool with, "I'll let you look at it later. It doesn't belong to us".
So, I cracked it open about 30 minutes ago, looked at the sigs, saw the yellow lei and read Teh Book to see if I could determine its meaning.
Piano's additional gift has made it through the rounds all the way back here. I notice that there's a bit of confusion about why there aren't more messages in Teh Book than there are so I'll try to clarify...
It's a small spiral notebook. Pages are easily torn out to be kept by recipients. Unless a page is specifically meant for someone to tear out and keep, they should be left in for the duration. It appears that several pages may have stayed along the path. I think that's coojer than hot chocolate after a day in a homemade snow fort.
A synapse sparked once I saw that it's running out of places to sign. Just after I shipped it off to Muffy, I wished that I'd added a length of fabric to the back of the thing for more signatures. Now that it's back, I've got a second chance.
First thing's first: new markers.
Then fabric.
Then velcro.
Then a new entry or three in Teh Book.
Then, off it goes back into your hands.
Thank you, Skeeter, for taking care of it while you took care of yourself. No elaboration required.

No indication of vermin either large or small. It's a bit creased from the sending back and forth but all in all it can be accurately described as "well worn".
Before I send it off to Barbie, I'm going to wear it where people who know me will wonder what it means. Some already know the story. For those who don't that ask, "who's that?".....
I'm not sure where to begin but it is certainly a storyteller's hat. It'll come to me.
As for the markers, I'm happy to scare them up for the next round. Kinda feels like I'm the charging station for the battery so I'd rather keep that illusion if you don't mind, Skeet. Use the money on something self-indulgent and we'll call it even. Consider the entire transaction as a weird sort of xmas present. You've already given me mine.
I've found the right fabric for the neck extension but Sid will have to find the free time and state of mind to help me do it right. I can stitch but I can't sew. I'm thinking Velcro.
I'll let you guys know when it's headed back out. It showed up charged but I wanna add some storage capacity.
Patience.

I had to wear it. Call it a weakness.

It leaves here this week regardless of my intentions for alteration.

So much for THAT promise. Not to worry. Sources tell me that I'm just paving my way to Hell or some such nonsense.
Things happen. Things like birthdays and vacations.
The fabric is ready but I can't sew for shit. I can mend things but that's not good enough.
Sid found some new Silver Markers! Holly hopes the thing makes it to China. When I was a kid we used shovels in the back yard to convey those hopes.
Since Skeet sent it here, it's been worn to every personal event on my agenda. Some of those have been simple trips to get milk and toilet paper but on every trip, someone has looked at it and asked something like, "is that your grandfather?"
That's my opening. It depends on time constraints as to how much detail I'm able to provide but a story comes out of me in each circumstance.
No details have ever been given. Just general Lessons.
Expect some enhancements. Be prepared to receive it more than once if need be.

Once upon a time, there was a Hat.
It wasn't an ordinary hat by any stretch of the imagination.
This hat transcended all of space and time to touch and retrieve the thoughts and feelings of all who wore it.
The first time it was worn, it was just a regular hat. Anyone could have bought one just like it at the local haberdashery. Some did.
This hat in particular was first worn by a man with an amazing ability to tell stories. The longer he wore it, the more the hat absorbed.
As it was passed around campfires from head to head, everyone who put it on felt their own stories well up inside and overflow across their lips as if a light deep inside of them had suddenly turned on. His grandson found a way to change those thoughts back into energy.
I've attempted to turn that energy back into a thought.
That hat was so special that I tried to make copies of it.
Two of those copies remain.
The thoughts within them aren't what I expected. Time changes expectations.
Still, I'm impressed.
We've been on a journey that barely covers a decade.
By just reading this, I imagine that your emotions grip you in ways to which only a few can relate.
My copy of the Hat off to you.
The copy that has been passed from my head to yours and back is ready for it's next stop around our campfire.
Thank you for being patient with me.
