Meet "Molly" (well, that's what Madison calls him/her/it anyways) She insists that it's a girl. And I found out that "he" was a fall 04 hatch. Approx 4-5 months old and about 19 inches long :)
I'll get better pics next weekend when I'll start handling "him"

We've had one new member in a month and this is how they get treated? Moving the thread is appropriate, the comment wasn't.

things sound much bigger in chat (I didn't think about your little female fingers in reference to the "big around as my pinky" part until I'd walked away from the puter.

my beautiful ornate cantil. That's a pretty agkistrodon! I wish I had a male, she is prime and ready to breed. :(

"Nix Bail Bonds 595-3535"
You need to call them to let them know that your diamondback is advertising for them. ;)
Primo pics. Makes me miss Pocket.
How long do snakes generally live? I could never keep one more than a few months so I'm clueless. I'd rather learn here than "Googling".
Depends on the species but in general:
A king/milk/rat/corn snake (usually born in the late summer) will mature enough in two full years to breed. Males are generally ready before females. If they are fed well, not over bred, and kept in a suitable clean cage where they feel safe, most of those snakes should make around 15 years. Quite a few live more than 20.
Like I said, it depends on the species. One of the things I don't like about most pythons/boas is that they normally live 25-30 years (if taken care of properly). So a ball python can easily outlive your mortgage (and a couple 2 or 3 dogs)
So, vyper's cali king, up top, should still be crawling around looking for mice in 2020.
Where will your computer, car, and favorite pair of jeans be by then?

w00t! nice pics mac... how old are your kings? they look to be about the same size as my cali king, probably a little bigger... he grew a lot in just one shed cycle! And he's an '04 hatch, so he's no more than 7-9 months old or so.
By the way, he just scared the shit out of tack, the water dragon. I was holding the snake and tack was eyeballing him through the glass, and he (tack)was doing the "dominance" thing where he opens his mouth and raises the spikes on the back of his head. Then when he tried to move, he fell off of his branch and started like, convulsing and then just laid there. I thought he was dead. so I reached in and petted his back, and saw that he was breathing, but he couldn't move. I picked him up and his back 3/4ths just hung there. And he had a mouthful of mulch. As I petted him a little more, he started moving his front legs, but still not his back legs. I figured I'd let him be for a little while and see if he got any better, but I was worried that he'd had a stroke and would end up paralyzed. (He's already gimpy-missing all of his toes on his front feet). He had turned a deep brown color over most of his body and his white stripes all but dissappeared from the stress. Eventually, a couple of minutes later, he moved one of his back legs, so I reached in and petted him a bit more and he crawled to the other end of the cage. He seems okay now, and his green is comng back and I can see his stripes again, but I'm still worried that he swallowed that mouthful of mulch. But considering I thought he was dead at first, that doesn't seem so bad. I'll just have to watch him really closely for a few days to make sue he doesn't end up with an impaction.
Damn, that was scary!
Mental note: don't snow the snake to the lizards!

(hopefully ready to breed now, it's the female's first season but she shed and seems receptive)
Boy howdy. Mac sure does know about the ladies. :-D
Those variable kings are rather small snakes. My full grown adults only eat fuzzies.
The yellow one is a male who originally came from the columbus zoo (http://www.colszoo.org/). I don't know how old he is exactly, but he's at least 8 years old.
The tangerine one is a female who was born in mid 2002. She came from john cherry (http://www.cherryvillereptiles.com/) She still seems small to me but she should be old enough to breed and I cooled her (which is the effect I have on most females)
I left them together overnight and she was on the opposite end of the cage from him the next day. So, maybe she wasn't receptive. :/
as for my knowledge of when the ladies are ready to breed:
normally after a proper cooling period (one in which they give the guy the cold shoulder) they come into season (marked by consumption of beer, tequilla or whiskey) Then they shed (their panties) and they are receptive (to seXoring)
remember! breeding is all about the successful passing of desirable genes, so try to only breed with females who will make the best looking babies!
.....and if they babies don't eat, put them in the freezer and feed them to your cannibalistic cousins
ok, that's enough of that conversation
