Never read his stuff.

I think he was a dirty hippie loser. But I'm not sure.

Fuck him.

Cowardly it was not. I admire his work, I admire the courage with which he lived, and I admire the courage he showed in choosing his own ending place and time.

The last thing he wrote which I read was prescient in the extreme.

You can find it here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=1250751&type=package

muddy: he was about as far from a dirty hippie as one could get and still ingest as many drugs as he is reputed to have ingested.

simon: i have to disagree with you there. while i agree it would be his choice as to where and when to end his life, from all anyone is saying as of yet there seems to have been no reason. he wasn't sick, he wasn't alone. his wife and son were both staying with him. to me it seems that he decided he had nothing left to give, and that is the cowardly part. i firmly believe he still had plenty to give, if not to us then to his own family. what ever happened to retirement? could he really have not retired unless it was in death?
today i heard him compared to hemingway. it's apt, no?

BTW: in case anyone wonders why i care, i'll tell you. almost all my favorite authors are women, and most of them wrote from a distinctly female perspective. but he was one of my very favorite authors, probably the one i have loved the longest, and it would seem that i should hate him. in the last year i have struggled with my revulsion at some of his deeds and opinions. but i loved his work anyway. i have never read another author, male or female, living or dead, who had such a wonderful grasp of the power of language and such a cunning ability to use it to paint a picture in the mind of the reader. his dialogue is perfect, his description flawless. his narrative reads like mozart. he made music with words, and in our gutteral english language that is a momentous feat.
I WANT MY HERO BACK, DAMMIT!!!

I don't know Hunter Thompson at all.

I saw a movie with Johnny Depp (the key to the reasoning for watching that movie obviously was because of Johnny...not because of what Thompson wrote or did. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Good practice for Johnny for when he did Blow.

But what I've read of Thompson post humis is pretty repulsive and hilarious.

The man is honoured with the creation of "gonzo" journalism, which in itself sounds like something he studied at Clown College.

And he seemed like a clown too.

"What Thompson himself never felt the need to point out — although other practitioners of what at the time was called the New Journalism, like Tom Wolfe, were quick to note — was that his gonzo style rested on a foundation of solid journalistic experience. (Although he hadn't actually graduated from high school, Hunter had studied journalism at Columbia University, and he later worked for such publications as Time and the New York Herald Tribune.) Getting loaded didn't make you a journalist; nor did it make you a talented writer (another key requirement of the style). Getting loaded, in the case of most of his many young admirers, simply made them loaded — a time-honored way of avoiding the annoying work of actually sitting down to write the story."

Just another clown making a buck off of the exploitation of drugs and drink and calling it work.

What a dream.

Now, if his puppy needed rescuing, Barbie would post a thread about it.

I went to see HST speak a few times, and did have a chance to speak with him for a few minutes at a bar he was speaking at. I'm not terribly surprised at this news, but it is sad news. As bing said, mostly for his family. He gave everyone some good things to read, and it seems that if that was tapped out, maybe it was time to just kick back, and spend some time with the family.

I have a copy of generation of swine that I had him sign, and the signature is a perfect description. It's just a huge "HST" written in sharpie, messy, and falls off the edge of the page. So, bing, I'll join you in a toast. Or 34 toasts, with a handful of wierd pills I found in the bathroom of a strip club in Arizona where I was supposed to meet with henry kissinger, who was delayed by the police due to the disemboweled marmot hanging out of his suitcase.. All we need is a rental car, a fountain, some ducks and a desert eagle.

and btw: Mudflap = nekulturny ;)

As your lawyer, I advise you to purchase a tiger. A big vicious son of a bitch tiger. Not one of these trunk sized models shipped in from Japan between plastic Spongebob Squarepants lunch pails, but a real tank of a tiger.

And Barbie, if by "worldly", you mean having had ventured outside of spitting distance from the snowbank I was abandoned in as an ugly child, yes, I would be worldly.

i just don't see how you can voice such a strong opinion after reading one article, put out by MTV at that, and never having read anything he's written. in fact, even the MTV article points out that Thompson had the journalistic talent and his imitators were the burn outs. did you read my second post in here? about his talent for using language? do you just not get the sense of humor?

my new tiger and i are hurt and saddened by this. whipped cream?

The only thing wriiten by him I read is fear and loathing ( which btw I enjoyed ) and to be perfectly honest I had no Idea who the author was until the fellow died and the great information box told me so.

His death affects me not in the least. Ehy did he not OD instead of shoot himself?
