I've danced for most of my life, as well as hiked. In doing both for so long, I've noticed that they’re almost a part of me, for example, I don't feel right if I don't hike when possible or miss a dance class. The point of this post is to find out what other people have done for extended periods of time and what significance the length has. With that, post away. :)

Reading.
Started at age 39 months, have never stopped. If I am not in the presence of books, I get edgy. If I don't have a book I am currently reading within a few yards, I get hostile.
Writing - started when I was five years old, have never stopped. Was for a brief time a published author of science fiction short stories - I quit due to a rather traumatic event and never wrote anything again for submission for 20 years. I am writing again - some of that output appears here at THT.
Furniture/toy design - started about age 8, have never quit. It has been sporadic these last couple of decades, however.
Home design - started in high school, sold a few basic designs to an architect for refinement and finishing, now it's just fun.
Biological weapons design - an occasional mental exercise since undergraduate days.
Involuntary interview/interrogation technique design and application - got interested in my 20's, recently abandoned as an interest.

Playing guitar.
The most exciting thing about taking piano lessons was getting to learn "Child in the manger", that being ripped off by Cat "terrorist" Stevens in the form of "Morning has broken". It was about as small town pop star as could be.
Got given a guitar one Xmas by my older sister. Had a guitar primer that wasn't much more than "travis picking" 101. Figured the concept of barre chords myself, can remember writing down all twelve of them in tabliature, it was a definative "I saw the light" moment.
Painted my dad's garage roof for enough money to buy my first electric guitar. Left school to work in an insurance company so I could afford an amp.
Last night (20 years later) I played a gig, got payed eight beers, didn't get laid.

oh, and it's the girth that counts, btw.

Reading. Not sure when I started but have never stopped since.
Writing. Not sure when I started. Have started and stopped incessantly since.
Currupting young and impressionable minds. Started from the womb and continue still.
Plotting for world domination. Again, from the womb and continue still.
Alternative power systems- and not those damn hybrid cars- started as a teen, just wish I had the physics knowledge to finish some of my designs.
Alternative oil and gas production systems. Again, started as a teen just need the physics and/or a petroleum engineer to help finish them.
Coming here. Been doing since...
