Well I dont own any of these consoles but I have been following the debate about them.. And as X-Box (Microsofts gaming-console) was revealed this weekend it seems Playstation 2 has got itself a worthy competitor..
Look at what the media said.
LAS VEGAS--In a flashy unveiling on Saturday, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) Chairman Bill Gates gave video gamers their first look at the highly anticipated game player Xbox that Microsoft hopes will propel it to the top of the $20 billion a year video game industry.
With an "X" molded into the top of a sleek black box, a circular lime green logo fixed in the X's center and hand held controllers that shake as game characters get blasted away, the Xbox has the look and feel video gamers should like.
It drew applause from a jam-packed theater at the giant International Consumer Electronics Show, and smiles from pro wrestling's The Rock, who came on stage to tout Xbox's ability to render lifelike smackdowns in the World Wrestling Federation's game currently being developed for Xbox.
"We set out to really build something that was a breakthrough for gamers," said Gates, just before slipping back a black cloth that had cloaked the machine for about an hour as Gates talked about future applications for the personal computer.
The Xbox comes with a hard disk drive to store games, four ports for added players versus the more normal two, compatibility with new digital high definition televisions and high-speed Internet connections.
"This thing is a broadband (high-speed Internet) gaming device," said Gates.
That factor is important because the Xbox's chief rival, Sony Corp.'s (6758.T) PlayStation 2, is Internet-capable, but it needs certain accessory items to connect to the Net. Game playing over the Net is a growing market.
Absent from the pomp, however, were details like Xbox's price, shipping dates and announcements on game developers, especially in overseas markets such as Japan where video games are hot and rivals Sony, Nintendo Co. Ltd., (7974.T) and Sega Enterprises Ltd. (7964.T) dominate.
Microsoft did offer a few demonstrations of games in development that appeared to compare favorably with the look of PlayStation 2 games, and it offered testimonials from developers who were enthused about Xbox.
What attracts me here, and what I didn't know, is that both X-Box and Playstation2 has high-speed internet capability! This definately gives the whole console gaming-experience a new perspective.. This function is incorporated in the X-Box where as you have to buy extra equipment and installations before it will work on the Playstation2..
Feel free to discuss, delete or whatever.. Just thought it might be interesting!
